The news brings to an end the club’s long search for a training ground to rival the best facilities anywhere in Europe. Elmbridge Borough Council planning committee approved the scheme last Monday after a public consultation period that began in July. It is hoped that the site will be fully operational in July 2006. The multi-million pound state-of-the-art facility will be home to the club’s academy and all its professional players, including the first team squad under manager Jose Mourinho. It is one of the largest investments in academy, youth and community football programmes ever undertaken by a football club. The project is designed to unify all football aspects at the club, from the youngest academy player to the most experienced international footballer and will contain the latest in training and rehabilitation equipment. There will also be a substantial community programme in the local area. Mourinho said: “This is fantastic news for Chelsea. One of the reasons I joined the club was the commitment that Mr Abramovich and the board showed about investing in youth. “With the academy, youth, reserves and first team all on the same site, this will act as an inspiration for the young players at Chelsea. “A modern and top training ground is also important for first team players. Our current home at Harlington is an excellent facility but the club needs its own home for training and top players want to know about the facilities and their environment for work before they join a club. If we can tell them we have the best training ground this is a big advantage. I am looking forward to moving there.” Chief executive Peter Kenyon said: “The Cobham development is central to the future of the club and we are delighted we now have the final go-ahead. “Developing home grown players is a vitally important goal for Chelsea. One of the many reasons we wanted Jose is that he was also firmly committed to developing our academy, youth and reserve structure. “Cobham gives us the perfect platform for that. We are also totally committed to developing a community programme in the local area and we look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council and its residents who have been extremely supportive and positive. “The club would also like to put on record its thanks to our company secretary, Alan Shaw, whose tireless work on this project with the local council, has ensured its smooth progress to a positive conclusion.” The details of the community programme are currently being discussed by our Football in the Community department and Elmbridge Leisure Services. The site design has been tailored for community use. Shaun Gore, director of Chelsea’s Football in the Community said: “The training facilities at Cobham will be a massive step forward for Chelsea. Not only will we have state of the art playing and training facilities, it will also give the club a solid foundation from which to build. “The Football in the Community Department already has a very proactive working relationship with Elmbridge Leisure Services and development team and they will be working closely in the planning of a fully comprehensive community development programme. “The programme will encompass projects surrounding healthy lifestyles, education and football development. However there will be flexibility towards the needs of the local community. “The opportunity to use the magnificent facilities at Cobham through the community scheme will be a fantastic prospect for the local people of Elmbridge and we look forward to working with them.” One of the key factors in the planning approval process was the agreement of all sides that the design of the main building would need to blend in with the local landscape. To that end Alan Shaw, and the architects, AFL, based in Manchester, worked hard in consultation with the planning authorities to come up with the idea of a curved roof with a grass surface which would remain faithful to the surroundings. The height of the main building is no taller than any of the buildings in the immediate area. Initial planning permission for a facility to accommodate the academy and professional players was granted in September 2003. This was for 2000m sq. Chelsea then sought additional permission and the main building was substantially redesigned which reduced the overall footprint but increased its size by way of a basement built into the ground. One of the most distinctive aspects of the new design is a moat around the main building to allow light into the basement.
