The injury problems that have sadly affected Mario all too often during recent years have finally taken their toll and he has informed Chelsea of his decision to retire, despite one season remaining on his contract. He played 80 games for Chelsea, 26 as substitute with ten goals scored in the four seasons since Gianluca Vialli paid a healthy ￡5.6 million to Parma for the Croatian World Cup semi-finalist, primarily to replace Dan Petrescu on the right of midfield. Mario made a spectacular start to his Chelsea spell. In only his second game, a preposterous volley past West Ham in addition to a headed goal quickly saw him the talk of the stands - but the injury clouds were already gathering. In that same game he damaged his knee, the injury was aggravated on his next appearance and he would soon need an operation. Ever since his Chelsea career has been a stop-start story. It has not prevented Mario weighing in with some important goals, his aerial threat remaining undiminished, and he has also been more than happy to plug any hole in the team by taking on unfamiliar roles including one short but memorable stint at left-back. Above all though, Mario’s time at Stamford Bridge has been characterised by an infectious positive outlook which behind the scenes has played an important part in maintaining team morale. A year ago he retired from international football to boost his chances of bring his experience to Chelsea’s Champions League campaign, but last summer’s squad reinforcements plus more injury gloom reduced him to just five substitute appearances during the season. In light of that, Mario’s decision to call it a day is totally understandable. Chelsea Football Club wish him all the best for whatever comes next and would like thank him for his contribution on the pitch and for all the smiles off it.
