Celtics hungry for some more
The questions started before the season, and with a visit to each new city
they proliferated.
How can a team, especially in today’s NBA, remain hungry?
Kevin Garnett, in particular, developed a sixth sense for this line of
inquiry. The Celtics forward would tighten up, clench his jaw even, before
responding in terse fashion.
It is, of course, the lot of a defending champion to deal with this issue
upon visiting each new city.
But perhaps the Celtics have finally provided an answer.
They won their 14th straight game Friday night, when they defeated a
playoff-bound Hornets team. They are tied for the fourth-longest streak in
franchise history, have the best start ever by a Celtics team at 22-2, and
are also tied for the fourth-best start ever by an NBA team with only two
losses.
The evidence is circumstantial, but so what.
Allow Paul Pierce to expand on the issue.
“I think we’re a lot more hungry to prove something than we were last year,
” said the Celtics captain. “Our mentality is more concentrated. We have
more of a killer instinct now than I can recall from last year. I think we’
re more together. Whether we’re bickering or joking, we’re all together.”
It looks that way from the outside as well.
James Posey, who finally received his championship ring Friday while visiting
the Garden with his new teammates on the Hornets, can see a change in his
former team.
“For the most part,” Posey said of whether the Celtics are now actually a
better team. “Last year we had to learn things on the fly, because the team
was still coming together. They’ve been able to come together from the start
now, though.”
So mark Christmas and Jan. 9 on your calendar. The Celtics play the Lakers in
Los Angeles on that first date in what promises to be the NBA’s most heavily
watched regular-season game of the season. The Celtics visit Cleveland on
that second date.
Perhaps the rest of the league will have a better idea by then of just what,
exactly, this team is capable of accomplishing.
The Lakers are once again national darlings and the Cavaliers, with LeBron
James putting together another MVP-quality season, are also earning a lot of
beauty pageant votes.
But neither has won at the Celtics’ current clip.
Last year’s Celtics didn’t succeed at this clip.
Pierce can see the signs, with the team’s early morning, turbulence-filled
flight in from Washington the latest example of what this team can withstand.
Here’s another streak: After failing in their first back-to-back pairing on
Nov. 1 in Indiana, the Celtics have swept five of their last six back-to-back
series.
“You’re talking about playing a team on a back-to-back who in many people’
s eyes is going to be a contender,” Pierce said of the swing from beating
the Wizards on the road to beating the Hornets at home a night later. “That’
s the toughest thing to do in the league - coming from Washington, getting in
late, going to bed at 3:30 or 4:00, waking up and playing a game again
against one of the best MVP candidates in Chris Paul and David West.
“This team is mentally tough,” Pierce added. “We’ve shown, we proved it
and we don’t make excuses. The good thing about it we just try to find ways
to win.”
Celtics notes
After having Posey on his roster last season, coach Doc Rivers forgot what
the swingman can do to an opponent.
“Didn’t like it,” said Rivers. “He’s up to those same tricks. You know,
it’s funny, last year I loved what he did, setting flops, charges, grabbing,
holding, getting away with hitting on the arm. I think I complained about
Posey the entire game. He’s a pain in the butt, he really is, and now I know
why I loved him on my team.” . . .
After a day off, the C’s return to practice today in preparation for tomorrow
’s annual visit by the Utah Jazz.
犯规?),charges(盯人?),grabbing(抄截?),holding(?),getting away with hitting
on the arm(小动作?)。
