Paul Talks With Boston Common
by Andrew Mees
No. 34 recently sat down with Boston Common magazine for a Q&A with Alan M.
Dershowitz to talk about life, winning, and his place in Celtics history.
The link to the full interview is here. Paul spoke about many topics,
including the lean years he experienced in Boston, and how his outstanding
individual performances couldn’t bring team success.
“It hurt. It would have been hard for me to come back here and have them
retire my jersey and not have won a championship in this arena. It wasn’t
only my competitive nature, but also having to argue with the owners and
management, trying to convince them to give me some help. Our [current]
owners grew up here in Boston, and they all wanted to win. Then they brought
Danny [Ainge] in. I had a meeting with him during that year where we lost 18
in a row [the 2006-07 season]. It was like, ‘We can go in one direction and
I move on, or you’re going to have to bring in some talent, some veterans
who I can work with’. And I think I showed them my passion for winning and
for staying here.”
On what makes the Big Three – Paul, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen – work so
well:
“You do think about that, of course you do. But then you look at the type of
stars who you brought in. You’ve got Ray, one of the most unselfish players,
and you’ve got Kevin, who also is considered one of the most selfless
players in basketball. But you know what made it work? It was our
communication. When the trade was official, we constantly talked on the
phone. We all wanted the same thing. The previous year, when Ray was in
Seattle, he didn’t make the playoffs— great player on a bad team. Same
situation with me. Same situation with Kevin. So we all related to that. We
all talked about how the only way it was going to work was if we all dropped
our egos at the door, and we all bought into what Doc [Rivers] was trying to
teach us.
He also gave the story behind his trademark headband, and his latest tattoo:
THE TRUTH
“Let me tell you where the headband came in. It was in ’02, when we were
making a run. We were going out west, and our whole team wore headbands. We
went three for two on the trip. We used to go like one for four on those
trips. So I stuck with the headband, but everyone else stopped wearing theirs.
”
然後XXXXXXXX(我看不懂什麽意思).
“(The tattoo) is a dagger going through a ball, because basketball is my
gift and my curse. Obviously it’s all the good things that come from playing
basketball, but you also have to deal with the negative things that come from
your gift of being a basketball player. I was stabbed in a nightclub [in
Boston in 2000] for just being somebody who is popular. You have people who
are envious. That’s all part of being who I am. And that’s why there’s a
dagger through the basketball.”
The Truth also talked about his job as a role model.
THE TRUTH
“I feel like I carry a responsibility for kids who look up to me, kids who
buy my jersey, kids who ask for an autograph. Those things are genuine when
they come from a kid. Kids have so many negative influences that I feel like
if you can change even one kid’s life, you’re doing your job.”
