FrankTJMackey:
So, this was great. The Great German. It was pretty much everything I expected.
As we could tell from the marketing, The Good German doesn't hide the fact that
it's a throwback to epic 40s films like Casablanca, and the film makes no
apologies for doing so. One thing I love about Soderbergh, in general, is his
balls-out/experimental approach in some of his movies; already this year, we've
seen something from him that no one else was doing, with Bubble. Now, with The
Good German, he's given us something
Talentedmrwelles:
They really should rename it The FUCKING GREAT German.
Steven Soderbergh has created a brilliant homage to the thrillers of the
Golden Age of Hollywood. It evokes films from the 40s like The Maltese Falcon,
Double Indemnity, The Third Man and A Foreign Affair, but it still feels fresh
and never a copy of those classics. Soderbergh tightly directs Paul Anastasio's
fantastic multi-layered script to perfection.

FrankTJMackey:
And Blanchett. I've said already that she has the best collection of
performances of the decade out of anyone else that has performed in film this
decade, and The Good German is simply one more wonderful addition to an already
brilliant list of performances. Lena is one of Blanchett's finest creations;
her icy stare, her stature, her voice, all add to the mystery of Lena - yet
Blanchett has a death grip on the character.
Talentedmrwelles:
Cate Blanchett commands the screen as Lena even when she is slinking in the
shadows. She is an enigma with secrets upon secrets and Blanchett brilliantly
controls what she chooses to reveal to the other characters and the audience
alike. She makes Lena simultaneously frightening and sympathetic.
