In a forthright interview with The Sunday Mail on the eve of the launch of her latest film, Armstrong accused Minogue and Kidman of lowering the standards of Australian entertainment. "I truly believe with acting and singing, those two have done more damage than anyone I've ever seen," she said. "I really do believe there is a correlation with the despair we're feeling and the fact that Kylie Minogue cannot sing. Why has she become a national icon? For achieving something that was beyond her ability. "It's the same with Nicole. The fact that Meryl Streep had to stand beside Nicole Kidman in The Hours, I just thought it was unbearable." Armstrong won an unprecedented two AFI awards in 2002 for her role as the cheated wife Sonja Zat in the film Lantana and as Heather Jelly in the hit TV series SeaChange. She expressed her disdain at the adulation the industry gives to beauty over talent, blaming it on the influence of the American Academy Awards. "It's gone from Gwyneth to Julia to Nicole to Halle, there's a new era of what so-called actors are," she said, naming Cate Blanchett as the "torch-bearer" for young female Australian actors to follow. "Thank God for Cate, she's extraordinary and she's the real deal." The "fortysomething" actor (she's actually 46) believes many Australian films are not being supported because too much emphasis is being placed on starring faces. "The element conducive to everything I've done that's gone really well is a complete meeting of the script and the characters," she said. "We have magnificent scriptwriters in this country who are not being given the backing they deserve." "Actors in this country are not richly rewarded," she said. "People in this industry expect you to look a particular way when you go out (to functions), and that costs money.
