1.EXPECTATIONS FOR THE OFFSEASON? QUESTION: What do you expect the Cardinals to do in the offseason? Please don't be vague. GOOLD: By definition, answers about the offseason are going to be "vague" or general because the offseason hasn't started yet, injuries happen, teams shopping today are selling tomorrow. There are so many variables -- and those are just the ones that we're able to mine. There might be personality conflicts or hidden injuries or masked opinions that we'll never know, and in some cases the Cardinals won't even know when they're talking with teams. That's just how it goes. The Cardinals will go shopping for an upgrade bat at a position -- most likely outfielder. They will camp outside the Marlins office and see what it takes to get an outfielder there, and whether some way somehow the unpalatable contract that comes with Giancarlo Stanton can be worked around. They will look at alternatives so that they can be ready if a move for an outfielder doesn't work They will talk with Toronto about Josh Donaldson, and they'll explore whatever other options they can re: bat. They'll also look at adding a starting pitcher. And they will go into the market for a reliever, one whom they think they can make into a closer. Now, that will likely lead to conversations with the Rays about Alex Colomé (above), and if the Rays want to make that trade, the Cardinals are going to be one of the teams interested. 2.ARMS TALKS WITH TAMPA BAY? QUESTION: I've got my eye on the Rays' Archer and Colome. What would it take to get them and do the Rays need an OF or two? GOOLD: See, now you're thinking about the conversations the Cardinals are goingto try and have. It would take a starter to replace Archer, plus perhaps an upside minor-leaguer, and then you'd be moving on to an elite closer and we saw what Miller, Chapman got with less years of control. You're talking about a blockbuster, some of the highest-end prospects and control the Cardinals have. The payoff would be significant. 3.WHERE'S LYNN IN 2018? QUESTION: Is Lance Lynn pitching for another team next season? GOOLD: I put the updated odds of him staying at 35/65. Some I've talked to put it even lower 20/80 as the Cardinals are seem intent on going young, young, young. The answer they don't have for any of us is who is going to provide the innings. Wacha, Martinez could be set for that step, but one more with certainty would be a big deal for a contending team. Follow-up: Who gets a bigger contract this offseason: Lynn or Arrieta? GOOLD: Great question! It's going to be interesting. Arrieta has that bright glistening Cy Young Award season to boost him, and he's had a strong second half until the injury here that would have boosted him into free agency. I bet it's close, with Arrieta not finding the market he wants and getting just a tick more than the just younger Lance Lynn. So it could be the type of thing, where Lynn gets more years and thus more money, but Arrieta gets the bigger AAV. That's one way it could bend. Here's the more likely way it goes, based on the market: Arrieta gets Cueto money (6, $130m) and Lynn gets more than Zimmermann money (5, $110m). Or thereabouts. That's probably closer to what will happen. 4.TIME TO LAY OFF CARPENTER? COMMENT: Many Cardinals fans make the claim that Carp needs to be gone next season, constantly citing his low batting average and baserunning blunders. The guy has an OBP over .370! I understand that the team has struggled the past 2 years but it's incredible to see how much whining there is about Carpenter. GOOLD: I wonder if the view of Carpenter is going to begin to change today as it becomes clearer what he was playing through. Since spring training, he had an oblique injury that he was either playing through -- or playing to avoid. That hasn't faded. Now, is the shoulder issue related? Entirely possible. But it's something that he was playing with for awhile, though when he was asked he would avoid talking about it. Playing first base allowed him to hide the pain on throws -- but it certainly explains some of the slumps he's had at the plate and the times when there hasn't been a charge in the ball of his bat. Knowing that, and still seeing the OBP might offer a different angle on his season, no? He is doing what he is good at doing -- getting on base. Follow-up: What did the team knew about Carpenter injuries relative to what they ended up doing with Matt Adams? GOOLD: Carpenter said Matheny knew and has been helping him "manage" and "mask" it. 5.OUTFIELD OUTLOOK? QUESTION: Who would be the four outfielders to keep for 2018 (if no more are acquired this offseason)? GOOLD: Don't be so quick to dismiss the acquisition of an outfielder. That's an area where the Cardinals will look to make an upgrade. That is where three Marlins of interest all play. Follow-up: Which of the Marlins outfielders most interest the Cards? GOOLD: All three -- Stanton, Yelich (above), Ozuna. Order to be determined as new information is gathered from new owners. I remain bullish on Yelich as a rising star. Follow-up: Speaking of coveted hitters, what kind of contract will J.D. Martinez get next year? GOOLD: Justin Upton-like.
