LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 08/28/2008 ANKIEL STILL AILING Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel, bothered for a month with what has been diagnosed as a strained abdominal muscle, went to the bench against Milwaukee lefthander Manny Parra on Wednesday night, having gone four for his last 36. Ankiel says the ailment is more of a factor when he runs, but he hasn't been able to do much offensively lately, either, with just three homers and nine runs batted in this month. Manager Tony La Russa had expressed concern before Wednesday's game that the injury could be a more serious injury like the sports hernia for which Chris Duncan eventually had to have surgery last year. After taking early batting practice Wednesday, Ankiel went to a doctor to be checked before returning to the ballpark. As to the sports hernia prospect, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said, "I think that's been ruled out before. (The visit) was really a status check. There's been no change. The diagnosis is the same. That's not bad." The schedule will afford Ankiel as much rest as he can get. The Cardinals have an off day today, and the Houston Astros will pitch lefthanders Friday and Sunday against the Cardinals, so Ankiel, struggling against lefthanders lately, probably will sit then, too. But other than that, Ankiel, who has 24 homers and 68 RBIs, said, "I'm not going to rest until the season's over." Asked if he was compromised by the injury, Ankiel said, "I can't run 100 percent. My swing is fine. I'm not having any problems with my swing. It's just running. You just have to be controlled, which stinks.
