LUCIE, FLA. — Moving before, during and after Friday's exhibition win over the New York Mets, the Cardinals reversed field at second base, postponed a call on their final position player and solidified a pitching staff. Manager Tony La Russa did not dispute that the lineup he posted Friday morning closely resembles the one he intends to start in Monday's season opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. While walking one, Hancock remains the only reliever in camp who has struck out a batter in each appearance. Spivey, signed for a guaranteed $1.2 million in December, has struggled in all aspects of the game. Spivey interrupted a two-for-26 skid with an infield single in the ninth inning of Friday's 9-6 win. The infielder's performance has been so out of character that La Russa has wondered if he's playing with a hurt right shoulder. "I want to make sure his shoulder's all right. He's taken some funny swings. It might be because something's going on. But you can also take funny swings when you press," La Russa said. La Russa has met several times with Spivey about his struggles, urging him not to obsess over each at-bat. Teammates acknowledge Spivey as a "character guy" and many have offered encouragement. However, his fitful play has become a source for concern, causing some within the organization to speculate about the potential for a trade. General manager Walt Jocketty recently denied trade talks with New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman regarding ex-Redbirds utility player Miguel Cairo. Spivey's status can go either way, according to club sources, as the possibility of releasing him was broached.
