After WWII and Taiwan’s retrocession to Chinese government , the ROC government resumed of the university and renamed it “National Taiwan University” on Nov 15 ,1945 The university has a total of 11 colleges,54 departments, 96graduate institutes and four research centers. The number of students reached 29877 in 2004 . 2.Fu Si-nian Memorial Garden Fu Si-nian Memorial Garden originally the arboretum during the Taihoku Imperial University era. Many rare tropical plants from Southeast Asia were grown here. We can see a number of biological phenomena unique to tropical plants, such as buttresses, supporting roots, and stranglers. For example, silver-leaf tree and dillenia both have buttresses. This special mechanism developed to adapt the trees to the damp air, high temperature, and thin soil horizons of tropical rainforests. There are lots of common tropical plants in this area, among them fen palms are in large quantities, which can be of many daily uses. Fu Si-nian Memorial Garden was not only a place to get to know tropical plants but also where the mausoleum of the late president Fu Si-nian’s ashes is situated. The mausoleum’s design was inspired by the Parthenon Temple of Athens; with the mausoleum, the geometric pond ,and the tapered monument, the garden has become a commemoration of the first president of NTU 3.Royal Palm Boulevard The protagonist of the boulevard is royal palm. For students here, royal palms have become an important university emblem, after the Fu Bell, azaleas, and the Drunken Moon Lake. Towering and straight , royal palm is the tallest and the most impressive of the palms imported. Beneath the palms are azaleas, and since 1997, in March we hold the Azalea Festival. When azaleas bloom in spring, many students would pick up the fallen azaleas and arrange them in to some patterns or Chinese characters; this has become a characteristic sight of the boulevard. 4.The features of the plants in NTU Geologically speaking, Taipei was once a bay, semi-salty lake and freshwater marshland. Therefore, the NTU campus has experienced the periods of being a coast and a marshland. The seed of plant once thrived on these two types of lands are more or less residual in the soil, although it had become farmland during the end of the Ching Dynasty. That is the main reason why Chinese hackberry (Celtis sinensis Pers.), a typical species on the coast, fish-killer tree（Barringtonia racemosa (L.) Blume ex. DC.）, a marshland plant, and water willow (Salix warburgii O. Seem.), a marshland plant, still germinating in the campus naturally. The hot and humid weather in summer gives the potential for growing tropical plants. The low temperature brought by the northeast monsoon in winter allows the growth of some temperate plants, ensuing that azalea blossom in spring and the Azalea Festival. From a global perspective, the NTU campus is suitable for the growth of subtropical plants. Those kinds of plants like camphor tree（Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl）and incense machilus（Machilus zuihoensis Hay.）can be seen everywhere here. As a result is essentially a natural botanical garden. 5.Campus Architecture The campus was designed in the western Baroque metropolis style constitutes a fish-bone shape road system on the campus, takes the Royal Palm Boulevard as the main axle. Each branch is dotted with a building as the ending. On the both sides of Royal Palm Blvd , buildings’ surfaces were fully pasted the brown 13 -ditches brick which is the main building characteristic of .colonial era. Moreover, The Taipei Empire University. (NTU) and the Tokyo Empire University share the consistent space structure. 6.Administration Building, The Fu Bell and College of Liberal Arts Administration Building is 9 years older than NTU itself. It was built as "Taipei College of Agriculture and Forestry”, with the totally different architecture style from what was built in Imperial University period. Delicate ornaments can be seen in this building. Now it’s the offices of university administration faculty. The most remarkable landmark in the Administration Square is the Fu Bell, which is regarded as the symbol of sprit of NTU and the lighthouse guarding our open-minded academic climate. And the open space in front of the Bell also becomes a holy place for significant gatherings . Whenever classes start and end, the Fu Bell always rings 21 times. This reason was originated from a well- known phrase saying by the late University President, Mr. Fu,” There are only 21 hours a day, and 3 hours left are used for contemplation and meditation.” Besides, the most important building here is Administration Building itself, which is classified as the third degree historic spot by the Taipei government. It’s indeed a significant cultural legacy for Taipei City. The most typical plants in this area are flame trees. Their flowers are very similar to butterflies. Whenever they are in full bloom, blossom is so red that it makes the trees just look like they were on fire. That’s why they are called ‘flame trees.’ In addition, the most popular animal in this area are owls. They have inhabited the trees beside the Administration Building for quite a long time, and even once been reported by the mass media. College of Liberal Arts is a hot spot for newly-weds to take photos. The most famous plants in this area are olives, which are just on the both sides of the main entrance. Furthermore, plants near here are banyans, cycad, Indonesian sandalwoods and Taiwanese heaths. Taiwanese heaths are very scarce. Indonesian sandalwoods are so called “red wood”, one of the most valuable timber in the world. As for cycads, they are very rare and scarce, too. 7.Moon Lake In former times, the Moon Lake used to be the regulating pond of a water ditch . However, when NTU was building the “Freshmen Building,” it cut off the tunnel between the lake and ditch. But you can still trace the path of the tunnel if you follow the willow trees. Originally, there was a long bridge which used to link the pavilion in the middle of Moon Lake with its bank was removed by the school for students’ safety. There is still a prevailing ghost story related to the removal of the bridge. It is said that at one midnight a couple made an appointment to negotiate the break up at the pavilion of the lake. And the girl arrived but did not see the boy, she was so heart-broken that she jumped into the lake and died. After that, it’s rumored that there was often a girl dressed in white with pale complexion who regularly appeared at the midnight to ask, “What time is it now?” 8.NTU Sports Center NTU sport center is a multifunctional buildings. The main purpose was to provide more space for students ’activities and school’s large-scale ceremonies. Moreover, many concerts .This building contains several major parts such as Basketball court,volleyball court, warm swimming pool, gym, table tennis court, squash court,dancing room, judo court, international conference hall, coffee shop, andparking lot. With its convenient communications and cordial service, NTU Sports Center indeed serves its functions well for the communities. 9.Little Mall The Little Mall is a functional building for campus life which provides student a place to meet their daily needs. The Little Mall has restaurants and shop serves varieties of food and daily necessity, there are also souvenir shop , book store ,copy center and post office. Every noon, the Little Mall becomes a very lively place because not only most of the students spend their lunch time over here but also many student clubs gather here to advertise their own clubs and activities. -- 应无所住 而生其心 --
