Part II
Now, I want to tell you how to appreciate the beauty of Calligraphy. Actually, the aesthetic of handwriting is the same in every language. Thus, for you to understand easily(为了让你们容易了解), first, I take English characters as examples. Now, I demonstrate one way to write(印刷体, print hand). And then, I demonstrate another way to write(书写体, cursive writing).
Compared to print hand, the cursive writing looks much more beautiful because every character is connected smoothly as a stream, which makes us able to imagine the movement of writing throughout the scripts. In other words, it is those successive scripts(连续的笔迹) that make the aesthetic feeling.
As far as the movement of writing is concerned, Chinese characters have something different. For one thing, the usual way of writing in English is from left to the right (英文字的书写习惯是由左下到右上), which left an L-shaped circle on the paper. However, the usual way of writing in Chinese is in opposite direction, which forms an alpha-shaped circle. For another thing, occasionally, calligraphers do not leave the alpha-shaped circles on the paper. As a result, when appreciating calligraphic works,
the most important thing is to take advantage of those strokes on the paper to imagine the movement of writing. If the strokes match the naturally movement of writing, we may get the feeling of aesthetic. This is so-called the Tao is in the word(目击道存).
