The Irpini knew they had a mountain to climb after the first leg of this relegation play-out, which they lost 2-0 on neutral turf in Perugia. They needed to win by three clear goals to stay in Serie B, as a level aggregate score would see Albinoleffe triumph due to their higher position in the final table. The Bergamo club had the better of the first half and threatened with Russo, Testini's volley and a Joelson header. Yet it was Avellino who broke the deadlock through Millesi's angled drive on the hour mark. Albinoleffe hit back and all but sealed their status with a Russo volley and a Regonesi penalty for D'Andrea's foul on Joelson within the next 10 minutes of play. Credit must be given to the Southerners for never giving up in front of thousands of travelling fans. Millesi struck again by taking advantage of a Coser goalkeeping error and Monticciolo ensured a late 3-2 victory with a free kick on 84 minutes, but it wasn't enough. Avellino slide into Serie C1, 4-3 on aggregate, along with Ternana, Cremonese and Catanzaro.
