A number of peninsula based outfits did show an interest in the striker, but their slowness to react allowed Monaco to take him on loan from Valencia for the rest of the season. "Marco is a player with great potential, but we couldn't wait around until the last minute on January 31 to reach an agreement," agent Franco Zavaglia stated. Inter, Parma and Milan were associated with the unsettled attacker who now finds himself at the disposal of Francesco Guidolin in France. "Di Vaio still has a small chance of making the World Cup squad and he therefore joined Monaco in the hope of becoming more visible to Marcello Lippi," added Zavaglia. Di Vaio has scored twice in 13 games for Italy but has been forgotten since leaving Juventus in 2004. Despite making an impression in Italy with Parma and the Old Lady, his 18 months in La Liga following his ￡7m move was problematic. He has started his Monaco adventure well, though, after netting on his debut on Thursday night.
