Panucci has barely been on speaking terms with Lippi since he took over the running of the national side and has been constantly overlooked by the 57-year-old, despite some excellent performancesfor Roma this season. It is thought that the 32-year-old's exclusion is a result of a personality clash that developed during their association at Inter rather than any concerns about age or ability. Indeed Lippi has persisted with Daniele Bonera and Cristian Zaccardo at right full-back despite, particularly in the case of the Parma player, their indifferent displays for the Azzurri and bristled at suggestions by journalists to make a change. The Italy boss claims that his decision to omit the Giallorossi wide man has been purely tactical and has always refuted any notion of a dislike for him. "Panucci is a fine player that causes opponents great difficulty," he said recently. "But my selections are purely tactical." The former Chelsea man, however, suspects otherwise and has said that if Lippi didn't have an agenda he would have already called him up to the side. "Anyone can see how I've been playing," he said. "He hasn't got a leg to stand on." But it seems that hostilities are about to come to an end with Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti, who is a good friend of Lippi, smoothing the way for appeasement by suggesting a clear-the-air meeting between the two.
