There's probably going to be times where I have to do it, or I'm in a groove," he said, promoting his new Jordan brand shoe line. "But if I'm doing that night-in, night-out, we're not going to have the balance that we need to win." That lack of balance was glaring at times last year's rollercoaster season. The Knicks looked dead in the water until an unheralded point guard named Jeremy Lin revived their postseason hopes while Anthony was out with an injury. The team's on-court chemistry when Antthony returned—despite his insistence that he could be productive without handling the ball as much—was never ideal. The forward did have the basketball much less (26% of the team's plays went through him during "Linsanity" as opposed to the usual 36%, according to Basketball Reference), but he produced just 16 points per game while playing with Lin. The apparent tug-of-war over who should lead the offense factored into coach Mike D'Antoni's decision to resign last season, and seemed to feed into the perception that many analysts had of Anthony: That he couldn't readily adapt to a more team-oriented system that didn't revolve around his skill set. Anthony, who operated out of isolation plays more frequently (34%, according to Synergy Sports) than any player in 2011, insists he's comfortable ceding his ballhandling role and OK with playing along the perimeter more for two reasons. He cited the team's experienced point guards, Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd, saying they'd get the ball where it needed to be. Secondly, he pointed out that this year, because of a midseason trade during the 2010 season and the lockout last year, would be the first in which he got a full training camp with his teammates. He said it was fair to heap expectations on this club—which will be right up against the league's maximum salary cap for the next three seasons—laying out specific team goals. He said the most immediate one was to win the Atlantic Division title, which for the last five years has belonged to the Boston Celtics. "We need to get to 50 wins and get one of those top one, two or three seeds. To get homecourt advantage in the playoffs," he said.
