Ex-Met ace Johan Santana attempting another comeback
Once upon a time, Johan Santana was the best pitcher in the world. Now, at
the age of 37, the former Mets ace is just looking to find a way to make it
back to a big league mound.
After a series of lost years and odd, unpredictable non-arm injuries
(Achilles in 2013, toe infection in 2015) the ex-AL Cy Young winner is
attempting another comeback and hoping to latch on during the season.
Baseball fans haven't seen Santana on the hill in the bigs since a
forgettable shortened 2012 in Queens. After posting a un-Santana like 4.85
ERA for the Mets at the age of 33, injuries, years of wear and tear and bad
luck basically ended what was destined to be a Hall of Fame career.
While it's easy to forget now, Santana's peak was one of the best runs of
pitching baseball fans have ever seen. From 2004-2010, Santana was the best
pitcher in the sport. Here's where he ranked in major categories during that
seven-year stretch:
WAR: 1st
IP: 4th
Shutouts: 3rd
Wins: t-2nd
Strikeouts: 1st
ERA: 1st
FIP: 4th
ERA+: 1st
SO/BB: 3rd
In an era that included Roy Halladay, CC Sabathia, Randy Johnson, Roy Oswalt
and a slew of other great starters, Santana stood atop the sport. In a way,
his career arc is similar to another lefty that was knocked off the path to
Cooperstown by injury: Cliff Lee.
Although Santana's $137.5 million deal with the Mets wasn't a great long-term
investment, he did dominate from 2008-2010 (600 IP, 143 ERA+, 2.85 ERA) and
throw the only no-hitter in club history.
If this comeback attempt works, Santana can join ex-Yankee Chien-Ming Wang as
former New York aces that made it back after disappearing for years.
