: Surprising rookie poised
: BY ANTHONY RIEBER
: STAFF CORRESPONDENT
: October 5, 2005
: ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Joe Torre's surprising choice of Chien-Ming Wang to start
: tonight's Game 2 of the American League Division Series means we have to
: dispense with some business before discussing the rookie's chances against the
: Angels:
: It's pronounced "Wong." Not "Wang". Too bad nobody told the public-address
: announcer, who got it wrong in pregame introductions.
: Most of the Yankees call him "Wang" as sort of a locker-room joke. "What up,
: Wang?" is Derek Jeter's favorite hello to the 25-year-old, who is from Tainan,
: Taiwan, and speaks little English. He knows enough to laugh at the captain's
: kidding, though.
「What's up Wang?」(译注:双关
: The Angels don't know much about him, having never faced him, and that's one of
: the reasons Torre has gambled and tapped Wang instead of Shawn Chacon, who will
: start Game 4 Saturday at Yankee Stadium if it's needed.
Shawn
: "First of all, Wang hadn't pitched against this club," Torre said before last
: night's series opener at Angel Stadium. "Was that totally the determining
: factor? Not necessarily.
: "Wang had been pitching well lately; so has Chacon. Wang seems to have
: re-established himself as the pitcher he was before he got hurt. That was
: probably the thing that carried the most weight: He was a main part of our
: rotation for the longest time."
: The wisdom of Torre's decision will be apparent at around 1 a.m. tomorrow when
: Game 2 hits the late innings. Not that Torre is worried. Wang has demonstrated
: a coolness under fire that he finds appealing; in the manager's mind, it was
: just a matter of whether Wang was going to start Game 2 or 4.
: That Torre chose Wang over Chacon, who was 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in September,
: and other candidates, such as Jaret Wright and 10-0 Aaron Small, shows how far
: the rookie has come since making his major-league debut April 30. Wang went 8-5
: with a 4.02 ERA in 18 games (17 starts) despite missing two months with right
: shoulder inflammation.
: At the time he was injured, in early July, the Yankees feared Wang would be out
: for the rest of the season. He returned Sept. 8 and went 2-2, 4.36 the rest of
: the way. He started Friday in a 5-3 loss at Fenway Park, allowing the Red Sox
: five runs (three earned) in 62/3 innings with a season-high six walks.
: Nonetheless, Torre said he was impressed with his "demeanor" in the
: pressure-packed atmosphere.
: He wasn't the only one.
: "He's done a great job, especially earlier in the year before he got hurt,"
: Jeter said. "He was pitching as well as anyone we had. He came back and he's
: doing the same thing. He's fun to play behind because he throws a lot of
: strikes. Especially on the infield, because he usually throws a lot of ground
: balls."
: With his heavy sinker, Wang is an extreme ground-ball pitcher; he fielded nine
: comebackers three starts ago against Baltimore. He has also shown a knack for
: pitching deep into games with low pitch counts. He's averaging about 62/3
: innings and 90 pitches per start.
: "I've got a good team behind me and a lot of good players," Wang said yesterday,
: speaking English because the Yankees, oddly, did not supply a translator.
: "I'm not nervous."
