THE SCOUT'S REPORT: "This is a real tough one. They're two of the most feared hitters in the game. Vlad carries that lineup sometimes but Sheff could be the most dangerous hitter in their lineup and he's got the best bat-speed in the big leagues. Vlad's arm is obviously ahead. This is a slight edge, for sure." EDGE: ANGELS CATCHER JORGE POSADA vs. BENGIE MOLINA: Posada said he believes he's having his best defensive season and, from a pitch-calling perspective, it's hard to doubt him. Dealing with a slew of different starters takes adjusting. Then again, he doesn't have to catch Randy Johnson, who pitches to John Flaherty. Molina's brother, Jose, could play if Bengie DHs. THE SCOUT'S REPORT: "I've always liked Posada, though he's slowed down a bit this year. Bengie is a better defensive catcher and he's not afraid to call any pitch at any time. He'll block anything in the dirt. He can shut down the running game more than Posada, and that could hurt in this series. This is a slight edge." EDGE: ANGELS DESIGNATED HITTER JASON GIAMBI vs. JUAN RIVERA: Giambi's resurgence began in July, when he crushed 14 homers. After a sluggish start, he's been the Yanks' MVP of the second half and always finds ways to work a walk when he's not hitting. The Angels could use anyone from Jeff DaVanon to Jose Molina to Maicer Izturis in this spot. THE SCOUT'S REPORT: "I would have said anybody but Giambi back in April or May, but now I'd take him over anyone the Angels can put there. The Angels can match up with the pitchers and use Rivera vs. Randy Johnson, and maybe DaVanon vs. a righty. Even so, Giambi has the edge." EDGE: YANKEES PITCHERS THE STARTERS: The Angels had the advantage of lining up their rotation so they're sending their stud, 21-game winner Bartolo Colon, to the mound to start the series. The Yanks didn't have that luxury, though they were able to push Mike Mussina out of his Sunday start and into the opener. Randy Johnson had to pitch to clinch the division last Saturday, so he's taking the ball in Game 3, which is the Yanks' first home game of the series. That's the most pivotal game because if the Angels can beat him, they figure to be well on their way to winning the series – assuming it isn't over that very night. The Yanks also have more wild cards in their rotation in Chien-Ming Wang and Shawn Chacon, neither of whom have ever seen anything like baseball in October. THE SCOUT'S REPORT: "This is a tough one. The Randy Johnson we've seen lately is about as dominant as they come. When he's throwing like this, he can be virtually unhittable. As good as Colon is, Randy has the ability to be more dominant. Lackey is as good as anybody for five innings but he can get tired. Moose has been there before and knows what to do, and Chacon is the real X-factor in the whole thing. That lack of knowledge, I think, gives the Angels a tiny edge." EDGE: ANGELS THE BULLPENS: Although this seems like an obvious edge to the Angels, the Yanks' sturdy back-end is most powerful in the postseason. There's no denying the Angels' dominance in the middle innings, however, as Brendan Donnelly (1.21 WHIP) is solid and Scot Shields (98 strikeouts in 91 2/3 IP) has a rubber arm. Francisco Rodriguez (45 saves) is one of the best closers in the league but he's up against the greatest in Mariano Rivera (43 saves, 0.87 WHIP). No one is sure exactly who the Yanks' lefthander in the bullpen is (Al Leiter?) but Aaron Small provides excellent insurance if one of the starters comes up short. THE SCOUT'S REPORT: "This might be tough but any bullpen with Mariano Rivera gets the edge for me. As good as K-Rod's stuff is, he can get in the tendency of overthrowing so, in my mind, it's actually a big edge for the Yankees. The Angels have great middle relief – Shields is terrific and Donnelly gets the job done even if it's not pretty – but the Yankees can get through those innings and get an automatic finish from Mo."
