永嘉大师证道歌浅释 (58)
上士一决一切了,
中下多闻多不信。
但自怀中解垢衣,
谁能向外夸精进。
Fathoming one, superior people understand all;
Average and inferior people learn much, yet doubt much.
Simply taking off one’s filthy clothes,
Who would need to boast about one’s own vigor?
「上士一决一切了」:「上士」也就是上等之人,也就是善根利智的人,也就是宿世有修
持的人;所以他非常的聪明,是真正的聪明,不是世间的那个聪明。世间是什麽聪明呢?
就是世智辩聪。世智辩聪的人也很聪明,可是往往就会聪明反被聪明误 -- 因为聪明就帮
助他做了很多的糊涂事;这个样子谈不到是上士。
“Fathoming one, superior people understand all:” “superior people” are top
notch people, people with roots of goodness and sharp intelligence; they have
cultivated life after life in the past. So they are extremely intelligent with
genuine intelligence not worldly intelligence. What is worldly intelligence?
It is called worldly intelligence with eloquence. These people are very intell
igent, but very often they are misled by their intelligence. This is because t
heir worldly intelligence helps them to do many confused things. They cannot b
e considered as “superior people.”
这个「上士」就是有上士,也就是大菩萨乘愿再来;所以他一闻千悟,听见道理一说出来
了,他即刻就真正地了解了,一切都明了了。「上士一决」他有决断,不是优柔寡断,他
所见的理是彻底的,所以一切他都了然,就是一切都明白了。也就像镜子照物一样,一照
就了了,「物来则照,物去则无。」
“Superior people” are the great Bodhisattvas who return to the world becaus
e of their vows. Thus upon hearing one thing, he understands a thousand things
. Once he hears the principle spoken, he thoroughly understands instantly. “
Fathoming one, superior people” he is completely determined, neither feeling
irresolute nor hesitant. He thoroughly understands the principles, thus he is
clear about everything and understands all. It is like things reflected in a m
irror; everything is very clear in the reflection. “When things appear, they
are reflected; when things are gone, nothing remains.”
「中下多闻多不信」﹕这个「多闻」有的本子上又写「多疑」,意思是差不多的。「多闻
」就是看了很多的书,可是他又有所怀疑,他认理认得不清楚;因为认得不清楚,所以他
也就生不出信心来。因为这样子,所以叫「多闻多不信」;他听得也很多,可是他什麽也
不相信。
“Average and inferior people learn much, yet doubt much:” Another version sa
ys “many doubts” instead of “learn much.” Both versions more or less mean
the same thing. “Learn much” means well learned, but he has many doubts and
does not understand the principles clearly. So, he does not believe what he h
as learned. That is why it says, “learn much, yet doubt much.” He listens a
lot but he believes nothing.
华严经浅释
十地品第二十六之二 卷35:
性不偷盗。菩萨於自资财常知止足,於他慈恕,不欲侵损。若物属他,起他物想,终不於
此而生盗心。乃至草叶不与不取,何况其余资生之具!
「不欲侵损」:菩萨不想利益自己而侵损他人。假若财物是属於别人的,他绝不侵占别人
的利益;就是再名贵,甚至价值连城的稀世珍宝,菩萨也不会贪心。没有贪心,就不会偷
盗。如果贪得无厌,贪心太大,便生盗心。乃至於一草一木,不是别人送的也不敢取。一
草一木一叶,尚且如此,何况其他更贵重的东西呢?
你们不要学现在一般的美国学生,在学校里做老鼠。这句话怎麽讲呢?我想大家都曾经做
过学生,大概也都懂。学校里有一个公用的雪柜,是给学生摆放带来的食物。前面有人放
进去,後面跟着就有人取出吃掉。这种行为,就如老鼠,这是他们不知盗戒的重要。「一
芥不以与人,一芥不以取诸人。」这种廉洁而自爱的行为,他们不明白。
学生们在学校里,看见吃的东西,常不分彼此,他主观上认定你的就是我的,而我的可不
是你的!这是与戒律不相符合。乃至一草一叶,不是别人送的,也不能要。像这杯橙汁,
如不是别人供养的,我就不喝。虽然是小问题,如果小的问题都不能清净,那还能谈大的
吗?
所以修道,就应该在微尘处着手;积很多微尘,便可成山,不是很浅显的道理吗?持戒要
有不持自持的精神,修行要有不修自修的功夫。外表看来不持戒,而实际持戒严谨;看来
不修行,但却是真修行。
在我们金山圣寺和国际译经院中,你尽管说没有修行,光打妄想,也比一般在家人好得多
。在家人所行所做,都是在种偷盗的因,将来要受偷盗的果。我们在这儿所行所做,虽然
有些习气和小毛病,还没有完全改善,但是因为接近佛的道场,我们会一天比一天更明白
;即使一草一叶一芥子都不能随便盗取,何况其他资生的东西呢?我们这里不论大人小孩
,都能负起责任,辛勤工作,这样才是合情理的。

为什麽佛教不发扬光大?就是人人都没有惭愧心、不知道忏悔;不知道忏悔是个什麽?不
知道改过是个什麽?
《论语》上说「过则勿惮改」:无论有什麽过错,一定不要怕改;你要是怕改过,你保护
着你的过错,那将来一定会堕地狱。为什麽呢?你没有光明了嘛!这一点各位要特别注意
的。
