All-star Redd wants to make teammates better By TOM ENLUND Posted: Oct. 4, 2004 St. Francis - Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd didn't spend a whole lot of his off-season watching the Detroit Pistons win the National Basketball Association championship after they had ousted the Bucks from the first round of the playoffs. Redd certainly didn't expend any energy contributing to the United States Olympic effort, because he never received a call from anyone associated with USA Basketball. There was one thing Redd did accomplish over the summer, though. "I'll tell you what, my golf game got real nice this summer," said Redd, who joined his coaches and teammates at the annual media day Monday at the team's practice facility. But seriously, folks . . . Redd said he worked hard during the summer on basketball, especially after opposing defenses ganged up on him following his first all-star appearance. Redd experienced a breakout season, averaging a career-high 21.7 points, which ranked 10th in the league. He was named Eastern Conference player of the month in January, had a pair of 40-point games within a week against Orlando and New Orleans late in January and led the team in scoring 48 times. But it was also a learning experience for Redd, who received more attention from defenses than he had been accustomed to. And as the curtain fell on last season, the word on Redd was that now, as an all-star, part of his job description was to make his teammates better players. So Redd went to work over the summer at Ohio State, where he played in college. "(Basketball) comes first," said Redd after joking about his golf game. "I worked on my shot more, worked on my post-up game more. I played some five-on-five at the end of the summer and got an idea how it's kind of going to be played this year a little bit - try to get teammates involved and see the floor better. I pretty much worked on my whole game again." Redd, who will join his teammates in the first day of training camp today, said he also spent some time watching game tapes. "I'm older now and learning the game more," he said. "The more I play, the more I learn the game. Getting guys more involved is one of the things I'm going to try and do this year. It's a maturity thing. After getting double-teamed, and 'box-and-one' so many times, you have to learn. It has to be quick in your mind to get guys involved. "I watched film all summer long and watched how they were playing me and how I have to combat that. This year is going to be great. I think learning that and seeing that and recognizing defenses more is going to help me out. "I kind of rushed it. It was my first time being in that situation of being double-teamed last year. I was always the guy playing off guys, but now guys are going to play off me a little bit more. We've got guys that can do a lot. For me it's to just be patient." There had been speculation early last summer that Redd would be added to the Olympic team to provide a perimeter threat. During the NBA Finals, Detroit coach Larry Brown, who was also the Olympic coach, mentioned Redd's name several times as one who should be seriously considered for Team USA. But Redd said he never heard from anyone involved with USA Basketball. "Not one call," said Redd. "Not one call. I thought I might get a call, but it didn't happen." Redd said he couldn't say for sure whether he would have accepted an Olympic invitation, but he would have definitely considered it. He was flattered to hear his name mentioned in connection with the Olympic team. "People told me they heard my name pop up a lot, which is good," he said. "It gave me confidence. Like hey, Michael Redd could possibly play on the Olympic team. It gave me more confidence going into this year that maybe I could play at that elite level. It was an honor to be mentioned as a possible guy who could play on that team." Redd said he didn't watch the playoffs after the Bucks were eliminated. "But I was glad to see someone out of the East win it, the Detroit team that beat us," said Redd. --
