Suppan, who joined the Brewers as a free agent in December 2006, struggled this season, going 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in 15 appearances, including two starts. The 35-year-old right-hander was signed with the Brewers through the season, with an option for 2011. He was 29-36 with a 5.08 ERA in 110 games (97 starts) with the Brewers. He was a 16-game winner for the Cardinals in 2004-05, and won 44 games for St. Louis in the three seasons prior to his signing with Milwaukee. "Jeff has always been a true professional," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement. "He gave his best effort to the organization, whether it was on the field or in the community. I am confident that he can return to a starting rotation with another organization. We wish Jeff and his family nothing but the best." In a corresponding roster move, the Brewers said they will purchase the contract of right-hander Chris Smith from Triple-A Nashville. Smith has been dominant for Nashville this season, compiling a 2-1 record with a 1.71 ERA and 16 saves.
