Wynegar pinpoints start of '04 troubles PHOENIX -- Brewers relievers Mike Adams and Matt Wise are trying to avoid the "skinniest guy in camp" label and reported to Spring Training with some extra bulk. The 6-foot-5 Adams, a leading candidate to replace All-Star closer Dan Kolb this season, weighed in at 198 lbs. -- up 12 pounds from the end of last season -- when he took his physical on Sunday at Maryvale Baseball Park. Wise, who is also vying for a spot in the bullpen, was walking around the clubhouse bragging that he had added more than 20 pounds. "I got a little tired last year in August and lost some weight, but I felt better in September," said Adams, who had a 9.90 ERA in August and a 2.31 mark over the final month. "I'd rather put on some weight now, knowing that I'm going to lose some." Adams made 46 appearances last year and posted a 3.40 ERA. When the Brewers dealt Kolb to the Braves for hard-throwing prospect Jose Capellan, Adams became the favorite to fill the closer's role. But the Brewers later added right-handers Ricky Bottalico and Justin Lehr, and some view Capellan as a potential closer-in-waiting. Wise, generously listed at 197 lbs. by the Brewers, is up over 200 after pitching in 30 games with Milwaukee last season including three spot starts. He posted a 4.44 ERA in his first full year since undergoing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his elbow. At least one Brewer, watching Wise walk to the shower, didn't buy his story about a weight gain. "How can you put on 20 pounds and still look exactly the same?" Chad Moeller asked. Getting started: Weather permitting, Brewers pitchers and catchers will participate in their first formal workout on Monday morning. Most of the position players have already reported and will take in live batting practice. Yost is hoping that the rains which have doused the Valley of the Sun in recent weeks will hold off. Forecasters are not sure; they've predicted rain every day until Friday. "You only have so many days before games start," said Yost, who used to be in charge of scheduling the Braves' spring workouts under manager Bobby Cox and now relies on third base coach Rich Donnelly. "You can't get them back." Holdout: Yost and the team's medical staff will be very careful this spring with ace Ben Sheets, who underwent surgery in October to relieve a bulging disc in his back. Yost said Sheets would be held out of all fielding drills, and would not throw live batting practice along with other pitchers on Monday. Looking for answers: After a winter of "soul searching," Brewers hitting coach Butch Wynegar thinks he knows where it all went wrong in 2004. "To me, the whole key was losing Junior Spivey," said Wynegar, referring to the shoulder injury that cost Spivey the second half of last season. "For some reason, when he got hurt guys started thinking they had to pick up all of the slack." Spivey separated his shoulder diving headfirst into first base on July 2 at Pittsburgh. The injury coincided precisely with the Brewers' midseason collapse, and the team went on to finish at or near the bottom of almost every offensive category. "When he left that lineup -- nothing against [Keith] Ginter -- we struggled," Wynegar said. "There was something about Junior. Every time he was up there, he was a threat. We lost something when he went out." For now, Spivey is penciled into the No. 2 hole in the batting order behind projected leadoff man Brady Clark. Wynegar said he could also see Spivey as a No. 5 hitter, a spot the Brewers will likely instead fill with Geoff Jenkins. Spivey and new outfielder Carlos Lee are among only a handful of players who have yet to report. Spivey's wife, Tabitha, recently had the couple's first child. Signings: Pitchers Chris Capuano and Dennis Sarfate, and infielder J.J. Hardy agreed to contracts for 2005 on Saturday, leaving only four players unsigned on the 40-man roster. The remaining unsigned players are Bill Hall, Ben Hendrickson, Dave Krynzel and Lyle Overbay. Overbay reported to Maryvale Baseball Park on Sunday, just in time for a physical. -- To opengoodbook: 在吗 ★opengoodbook 有~~~ To opengoodbook: 你会不会在意昨天的事啊?? ._./ ★opengoodbook 我忘了or2 --
