Lehr among four other players re-signed MILWAUKEE -- In their first wave of routine signings, the Brewers on Tuesday announced they had come to terms with five players, including newcomers Jose Capellan and Justin Lehr. Pitchers Capellan, Lehr, Jorge De La Rosa and Luis Pena and outfielder Corey Hart all signed one-year contracts for 2005. The Brewers have reached agreement with 18 of the 39 players on their 40-man roster. Capellan, a hard-throwing starter acquired from Atlanta, and Lehr, a reliever acquired from Oakland, will make their first appearances at Maryvale Baseball Park when pitchers and catchers report Feb. 18. Capellan, 24, will join De La Rosa, 23, in the group of young pitchers trying to win a spot in the starting rotation. "At the back end of the rotation, you probably want a young guy who you're looking at for the future," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said earlier this winter. If Capellan needs more grooming, the Brewers could send him to Triple-A Nashville to stay on a regular rotation. De La Rosa is out of minor league options, so the Brewers would have to send him to the bullpen or risk losing him on the waiver wire. He made his Major League debut with Milwaukee last season and went 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA in five starts. Lehr, 27, will fit into the late relief mix after splitting last season between Triple-A Sacramento and Oakland. He notched 13 saves in the minors and went 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA in 27 appearances with the A's. Pena, 21, spent 2004 at Class A Beloit and finished 9-3 with a 3.92 ERA in 21 appearances, 16 starts. He was originally signed by the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent on July 12, 1999. The 23-year-old Hart could compete for a roster spot as a backup outfielder. He played mostly at Triple-A Indianapolis last season, hitting .282 with 15 home runs and 67 RBIs and earning the club's MVP Award.
