We know we've been rolling them around in our minds over the last few weeks. We're going to cut up our credit cards, quit smoking, start exercising, read more, eat less and be a better all-around addition to this earth. We are now faced with the new challenge of upholding our New Year's resolutions. Now, I won't bore you with my mundane promises to self. Instead, let's make resolutions for others (those are always more fun, anyway). Russell Branyan: I will cut down my strikeouts by 15 percent. If I am able to do so, I should play every day, hit 35-40 home runs and not give my manager ulcers Ben Sheets: I am going to put in endless hours in the batting cage and turn myself into a .300 hitter. I can then drive in more runs and finally lose the title of "Least Supported Pitcher in Baseball." Carlos Lee: I will embrace the role of "the man." For the first time in my career, I stand in no one's shadow. Gone are Mags, Paulie and the Big Hurt from my daily existence. I am joining a team that craves my abilities and will be cheered by fans that are prepared to lift me up as a superstar. Mike Adams: I will not panic. I have been waiting my whole life to make a living and have an impact in the Major Leagues and now my chance has arrived. I learned a lot watching Dan Kolb pitch to contact as a closer and succeed at an All-Star level. I have a lively fastball, two different sliders and guts the size of my home state of Texas. Brady Clark: I will prove myself worthy. For the past few years, I have been quietly and respectfully saying that I belong in the lineup every day. I have been undrafted, released or unwanted on several occasions, and have had to rely on my hard work and self belief to make it this far. After this season, you will believe in me, too. All professional baseball players: I will again remind myself how important the fans are. I will look at that eight-year-old without his two front teeth and remember that, almost yesterday, that was me. If I don't have time to sign his ball, I will prod myself to give him a wave or a smile, because if I were in his shoes, it would be something I may never forget. Finally, the big question: Was Santa good to you? Better said, will he answer your baseball Christmas wish during the upcoming season? Here are just a few of your wishes and I hope there's no coal in your baseball stocking: My wish is for Jones and Chris Saenz to have a very restful 2005, so that by some Christmas miracle they could make the pitching staff in 2006. -- Kelly S., West Allis, Wis. Finally, I want to thank all of you for sending in your thoughts and opinions on the recent flurry of trades made by Doug Melvin and Gord Ash. It is the busiest my mailbox has ever been in the offseason. Most of you approved and are excited, while some of you disapproved and remain skeptical. Out of the several hundred letters on the subject, this person's point of view was the most intriguing (and entertaining): I have to express a concern over these female fans that have fallen in love with Scotty Po and their displeasure over the trade. I believe that Scotty was a one-year wonder and it was great to see us get the great value in Lee rather than let him have another poor year and be stuck with a larger contract in '06 and no production. I wonder though, if we fielded a team of the best looking ballplayers if attendance would increase! Could you imagine?
