Record: 48-20 (Lost in Finals) Statistics: Minors Baseball Reference Team Page Best Position Player: Cody Johnson Cody really had about as good of a season as you could have in Danville this year. He hit .305/.374/.630 which is good for a 1.004 OPS. He even stole 7 bases to go with his 17 home runs and 57 RBI’s. To put his 17 homers into perspective, he lead the #2 home run hitter in the Appalachian league by 7. He also led the team in walks, which might be more of a product of pitchers pitching around him but it’s still encouraging. He’s making the Braves feel much better about drafting him in the first round in 2006. Best Pitcher: Cole Rohrbough I’m putting Cole Rohrbough here despite only playing half a season with Danville because he has to be the pitcher of the year somewhere and he pitched even less in Rome. You would think with Danville’s great pitching staff that this would be close but Rohrbough was so good that I have no hesitations giving it to him. He went 3-2 with a 1.09 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 8 games with Danville. However, the most impressive stats were his 15.81 K/9 and his 7.25 K/BB. If you just like the raw numbers that’s 58 strikeouts and 8 walks in 33 innings pitched. The Others: 2B/SS- Cole Miles: Cole had a very good season as Danville’s leadoff hitter. He hit .333 with a .398 OBP with 11 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He doesn’t have much power but handles the bat well as seen by his 23 walks and only 28 strikeouts. OF/1B- Ernesto Mejia: Mejia was only in Danville about half a season but still managed to hit .339 with 5 homers and 24 RBI’s. His .977 OPS was second on the team to Cody Johnson. His debut with Rome didn’t go well but he settled in to have a decent second half in low-A ball. SS- Michael Fisher: Fisher started the season with Danville before getting promoted to Myrtle Beach. He hit .325/.396/.476 with 27 RBI’s. He continued to hit well at the beach. SP- Jeffrey Locke: Now onto the real strength of the team, pitching. Locke would’ve been a shoe-in for pitcher of the year on most teams thanks to his ridiculous peripherals but just happened to pitch with Cole Rohrbough this year. Locke’s 2.66 ERA is good but his 0.92 WHIP is even better. He then tops that with a 10.91 K/9 and ridiculous 9.25 K/BB. That’s 74 strikeouts against just 8 walks in 61 innings. He was one of my favorite players last year and pitched his way into one of the better pitching prospects in the organization this year. SP- Jose Ortegano: With all the top pitching prospects on this team, Ortegano kind of flew under the radar with an ERA (1.48) second on the team behind Cole Rohrbough. His WHIP of 0.90 was equally impressive. He’s one of the few pitchers on this team who didn’t strike out one batter per inning but still came in with a healthy 8.1 K/9. He also showed excellent control as seen in his 5.0 K/BB. SP- Edgar Osuna: Osuna is another left-hander, as is every starter on this list. He posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. As good as those are, his most impressive statistics were his 10.8 K/9 and 6.0 K/BB. SP- Chad Rodgers: Rodgers is another draft pick from last year. He was a little inconsistent this year but put up some good numbers. His ERA (3.86) was worse than his WHIP would suggest at 1.04. He racked up 8.44 strikeouts per nine and walked 11 for a 4.18 K/BB. SP- Steven Evarts: Yet another draft pick from last year, Evarts posted an ERA under 2 at 1.95 with a WHIP that was second on the team to Cole Rohrbough at 0.89. He struck out 34 in 37 innings and only walked 4 for an impressive 8.5 K/BB. He was also the only full-time starter not to allow a home run. RP- Nick Fellman: Fellman was drafted this year and immediately took over as Danville’s closer. He saved 16 games and struck out 46 in 28 innings for a 14.78 K/9. He also only walked 7 for a 6.57 K/BB. RP- Cory Gearrin: Cory might be the only head-scratcher on this list. His numbers don’t look great on the surface: 4.50 ERA, 1.42 WHIP. Gearrin was exceptionally wild at the beginning of his pro career. He finished with 7 wild pitches and 6 hit-batsmen to go with his 5.53 BB/9. I put him on here because his numbers were atrocious early on but he pitched outstanding down the stretch. He finished with a 12.8 K/9 and his ERA really did come down a lot. I think he’ll be a quick mover now that he has overcome his initial struggles. SP- Eric Barrett: Barrett started the year in the GCL before being promoted to Danville. In Danville, he had a good ERA at 2.25 and a great WHIP at 0.92. He struck out 25 in 24 innings and didn’t allow a home run. His K/9 dropped from 12.51 to 9.37 after his promotion but some of that drop was due to initial struggles at the new level. --
