Diaz, who possesses an incredible dry wit, often jokes about how he never looks real smooth with anything that he does. While correct in this self-assessment, he also justifiably owns the confidence that has been reaped from the success he's enjoyed over the course of the past two seasons. Since the beginning of May last year, Diaz has tallied 422 at-bats and registered an impressive .341 batting average. The guy can flat out hit, and as I've pointed out a few times in these mailbags, many of us were flat out wrong about his defensive capabilities. He's just further proof that hard work and constant determination are the recipe for success. Obviously, you'd like to see your Minor League system stocked equally with both top pitching and top offensive talent. But that's seldom a luxury afforded any organization. The Braves still have a good crop of young pitchers in their organization. Top prospects like Matt Harrison and Jo-Jo Reyes just aren't quite ready to make that leap to the Major League level. But Reyes is getting pretty close. In the two starts he's made since being promoted to Richmond, the 23-year-old southpaw has gone 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA. In the 12 innings he's completed, he's surrendered nine hits, registered 11 strikeouts and issued six walks. When they were doing long-term planning for the makeup of their organization, the Braves couldn't predict the groin injury that cost Kyle Davies nearly a full season of development last year. But recently, the 23-year-old Davies has shown that he might be a solid pitcher in Atlanta for many years to come.
