After seeing Smoltz's comments, Jones came to Turner Field Saturday and said he was ready to play. After Cox was satisfied with his performance in batting practice, he changed the lineup to add Jones. "I don't know. You guys interviewed him last night, how'd ya'll take it," Jones said, and there was a silent pause that seemed to confirm to the third baseman what he believed. "I'd be stupid if I didn't take it the same way," he said. Then Jones said he'd play the rest of the games and that "somebody" had best not miss a start. "I'll play the rest of the games this year and do what I can," Jones said, then followed it with a clear jab at Smoltz: "Somebody I know better not miss a start, though." Jones said he and Smoltz had not spoken Saturday. "He made his point through the media, now I'm going to make mine through the media," Jones said.
