Goal.com 50: Maicon (14)
Maicon was the 14th best player of the 2009-10 season, according to a panel
of Goal.com experts.

Welcome to the Goal.com 50! In this special series, Goal.com editors
worldwide vote for the top 50 players of 2009-10. We count down to the
announcement of the winner on August 10th with profiles of each and every
player who made it into the top 50.
Debates about the best right-back in the world always center around the same
two Brazilians. Both Dani Alves and Maicon won league titles with their
respective clubs last season and both featured for the Selecao in the World
Cup, but only one cracks the top 15 in the Goal.com 50.
Maicon was a vital cog in the Inter machine that steamrolled its way to a
historic treble. He also featured for Brazil at the 2010 World Cup in South
Africa and despite a disappointing quarter-final exit, can still hold his
head high after his sublime performances.
Coming into the 2009-10 campaign, the Nerazzurri were looking to make amends
for a disappointing exit in the second round of the Champions League the
previous season. But there were questions marks in the Beneamata camp after
Zlatan Ibrahimovic left for Barcelona and pundits wondered if Inter would be
able to defend their Serie A crown, let alone make a deep run in Europe’s
most prestigious club competition.
A 4-0 shellacking over city rivals Milan in the second game of the season
foreshadowed the strength and resolve of this Inter squad and Maicon
exemplified the side’s spirit by scoring the third goal of the game on the
cusp of half-time.
A never say die attitude and a knack for popping up at vital moments to net
big goals are just the start of the special attributes the silky smooth
right-back possesses. Not many teams can count on their right-back to score
big goals in high pressure matches but Inter are blessed in that regard.
His best stretch of the season might have come in the middle of April when he
scored two vital goals in a four-day span in the victories over Juventus and
Barcelona respectively.
With Inter clinging to a slim advantage over Roma in the Serie A standings,
Maicon drove forward in the second half of the match against Juventus on
April 16. In an encounter that looked destined to finish in a scoreless draw,
the Brazilian took matters into his own hands and showed sublime technical
skill when he walloped a picturesque volley into the top corner in the 75th
minute to give the Beneamata three precious points over their bitter rivals
in a 2-0 victory.
Maicon then seized the day once again four days later in the first leg of the
Champions League semi-final against Barcelona at the Giuseppe Meazza. His
50-yard marauding run from deep inside his own territory put himself in a
perfect position to poke the ball past Victor Valdes to finish off a textbook
counter-attack and give Inter their first lead of the game en route to a 3-1
victory over the Blaugrana.
It was a tricky spell fraught with potential pitfalls for the Nerazzurri and
losses in those encounters could have severely crippled their chances of
obtaining silverware. But Maicon rose to the occasion and helped the club
remove the albatross around their neck by winning the Champions League after
a 45-year drought.
The full-back also impressed on the international scene with Brazil and
scored one of the goals of the tournament in the group stage victory over a
stubborn North Korea side. Although the Selecao were dumped out in the
quarters, Maicon did his reputation no harm with his solid performances and
he is one of the most highly-prized players on the transfer market with Real
Madrid hot on his trail.
Maicon was one of the first names on Jose Mourinho’s team-sheet last season
and featured prominently for the Nerazzurri in the treble-winning campaign,
making 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals in the process.
It was a storybook season for the Nerazzurri thanks in large part to the
heroics of their high flying right-back and Maicon takes his place as the top
ranked full-back in the Goal.com 50.
