The Barcelona player landed back in Brazil early on Thursday morning, with his hopes of appearing at the FIFA World Cup in tatters. Jose Luiz Runco, the Brazilian national team doctor, had shed light on the injury at a news conference on Wednesday when he said: "Yesterday (Tuesday), after trying a shot at goal, he said that his knee began bothering him again. Today, a more detailed examination revealed that the lateral meniscus had ruptured." At the press conference, a visibly shaken Edmilson expressed his disappointment at missing out on Germany 2006, especially having recently fought his way back after eight months out with torn right knee ligaments. "What hurts the most is that I worked so hard to recover and to earn my place in the squad," he said, with tears in his eyes. A member of Barcelona's UEFA Champions League-winning side, Edmilson admitted that the knee pains had resurfaced after the semi-final second leg against AC Milan. "After that game, all my efforts were focused on preparing for the final against Arsenal. So much so that my work-rate wasn't the same, and I wasn't playing with the same intensity, all to save myself for the final." The tough-tackling midfielder also revealed that despite feelings of discomfort in his knee, he was determined to keep on playing, unaware that he was carrying a serious injury. "I just wanted to keep going, even giving everything I had in every training session. That's just the way I am." Fellow Selecao midfielder Emerson suffered a similar disappointment prior to Korea/Japan 2002 and, according to Edmilson, had been quick to offer words of comfort to his crestfallen colleague.
