Subject: RE: The Definition of Brit-pop???
"Britpop" tends to refer to an upsurge in guitar-based UK pop between the
years 1994-1997. In style it was a rejection of US grunge, either
deliberately so (Blur) or not (Oasis), and tended to hark back to UK pop
paradigms: Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Small Faces, Sex Pistols, The Clash,
Wire, etc., etc. Sales of previously classified "indie" bands surged so
significantly in the UK during this period (partly stoked by the
prevalence of this sort of music on the radio - especially BBC Radio 1 and
on British television) that the press heralded a kind of UK pop
renaissance, hence Britpop.
In retrospect, the bands we called Britpop weren't stylistically that
similar... and some of them were just rubbish. And when radio turned away
from guitars towards teenpop and people began to feel embarrassed about
their Sleeper and Cast albums, "Britpop" as a media concept fell apart.
Hope that helps.
