Rank 1) C Travis d'Arnaud Age:23 ETA:2013 When Toronto traded Roy Halladay to Philadelphia, d'Arnaud may not have been the top prospect in the deal, but he might end up being the best. He has terrific all-around skills that surpass those of current young big league catcher J.P. Arencibia. He started truly fulfilling his offensive potential in 2011, showing the ability to hit for both average and power. Behind the plate, d'Arnaud is agile and athletic, and he has plenty of arm to help control the running game. He drew more walks and showed more power, though he's still striking out too much for a leadoff hitter. Better plate discipline should lead to a better average. He's already an excellent defensive outfielder with one of the best arms in the Minors. He's not far from being ready for Toronto's center field, with a stop in Triple-A Las Vegas next up. His plentiful tools should allow him to hit for average and more power as he matures. He's an excellent baserunner who should also continue to be a threat on the basepaths. He can play center field now, but an outfield with Anthony Gose in center and Marisnick in right should have Blue Jays fans excited. He should move up to Dunedin to start the 2012 season, but Double-A New Hampshire could be in his not-too-distant future. He can crank his fastball easily into the upper 90s and he commands it relatively well. His power breaking ball is a future above-average or plus pitch once he starts throwing it more consistently. His changeup gives him a third potentially above-average or better offering. Still just 19, he has a very good feel for pitching and the kind of big, strong and projectable frame you want to see in a young pitcher. He’s just getting started, but the finished product could be a frontline starter. The Blue Jays were very aggressive in the Draft and managed to sign Norris with an above-slot deal. He has a plus fastball for a lefty and commands the heater very well. His curve, once he’s more consistent with it, will give him a second plus pitch, and he already has a very good feel for a changeup. There was a little concern about flaws in his delivery, but nothing that raises any real red flags. With outstanding makeup and mound presence, he has the chance to be an outstanding left-handed starter pitching near the top of a rotation. He can run his fastball up into the low 90s and complements it with a breaking ball and a changeup. He made his pro debut in 2011, going straight to the short-season Northwest League at age 19. Facing mostly much older opposition, Nicolino was dominant, earning a late promotion to full-season ball, getting a playoff start and officially putting him on a bit of a faster track. The payoff with Sanchez could be huge as he fits the mold of the projectable right-hander. His fastball sits comfortably in the low 90s and there might be more in the tank as he matures. His second pitch is a very good curve, and although his changeup is behind the first two, he does show a good feel for the offspeed pitch. He’s struggled with command and that will continue to be a work in progress. Signed out of Venezuela, the young backstop has shown some ability with the bat, though he took a little bit of a step back numbers-wise during his full-season debut in 2011. He runs well for a catcher, and his athleticism, along with an arm that has thrown out 34 percent of would-be basestealers heading into the 2012 season, should allow him to develop into a solid defensive catcher when all is said and done. The Georgia Tech standout’s pitches -- fastball, curve, slider and changeup -- all can be average or better as he develops. He was drafted as a pitcher who could move quickly, and he made it to Double-A in his first full season. If he continues to command the ball and mix his pitches well, he’ll continue to move quickly. He profiles as a No. 3-type starter, a reliable and durable workhorse who could be big league ready soon.
