你的问题和 left shin 一点关系都没有。
首先，"broken by a line drive off the bat of Kevin Mench"，
左小腿是被平飞球 (line drive) 打中，不是被球棒 (bat) 打中。
by 这个介系词後面的受词是 a line drive，而 off the bat of sb.
是修饰 line drive 的补语。
其次，"since July 8, 2005, when a line drive broke his left shin."
那个 when 是关系副词，就是指 on July 8, 2005 的意思，
所以这件事是发生在 2005 年 7 月 8 日，而不是今天。
看後面那段："...since July 8, 2005. During that outing,..."
那个 that 指的是哪一次出赛？就是 July 8, 2005 的那一次出赛。
