Drafted 2000 - First round from HS
McGowan is a first round draft choice and had progressed up through
the Jays system to be the #1 pitching prospect until requiring Tommy John
surgery in May 2004. McGowan has great stuff and is expected to be a star
at the big league level. McGowan features a moving 94-96 mph fastball,
occasionally hitting 98 mph. McGowan has yet to master his other pitches,
a slider, curve and change. Once he can throw them where
he wants and when he wants, he will be in the big leagues.
Think Roger Clemens. JP Ricciardi has suggested McGowan could have
better "stuff" than Roy Halladay.
McGowan has improved his stats at each stage of his development.
Baseball America named McGowan the #2 prospect, and the #1 pitcher,
in the Jay's system for 2004. John Sickels gave McGowan an A- rating,
the highest for any Blue Jay. It remains to be seen how the injury impacts
his future potential.
