Indians acquire Phelps from Blue Jays CHICAGO (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians acquired designated hitter-first baseman Josh Phelps from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for Triple-A first baseman Eric Crozier. Phelps, 26, batted .237 with 12 homers and a team-leading 51 RBIs in 79 games with the Blue Jays, but he fell out of favor earlier this season and was only seeing playing time against left-handers. ``This is the moment of opportunity to get a guy that we've liked for a long time, watched and we can see a potential fit beyond this year,'' Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. ``The short-term benefit is that it improved our bench without a doubt.'' Nine of Phelps' homers came against left-handed pitchers, which made him attractive to Cleveland. Last season, Phelps hit .268 with 20 home runs and 66 RBIs in 119 games with Toronto. ``We've done a lot better against left-handers, but we need to improve that area,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said. ``The power he has from the right side has been talked about the last couple of years.''
