Alexis Rios - OF - Age 23 - ETA: April 2005 .352/.402/.521,11 HR,82 RBI,85/39 K/BB,11 SB in 514 AB for Double-A New Haven It took four years, but Rios finally emerged as a top prospect in 2003,becoming the Eastern League MVP by posting an OPS 235 points higher than his career total entering the year. The former first-round pick figures to continue to add power as he matures, maybe turning into a 25-30 homer guy. He's a legit center fielder defensively, but he'll end up in a corner in Toronto. It's not really a stretch to label McGowan as a potential ace, but I think of his as more of a No. 2. Expect him to make his major league debut before the end of next season. The next step is for him to turn some doubles into home runs. Once that happens, he'll be ready to take over as a regular for the Blue Jays It could happen in the second half of 2004 or in 2005. It should happen next year. The former second-round pick complements an average fastball and slider with a palmball that he can use against both righties and lefties. Many think he'll end up in the bullpen, but he deserves a chance to establish himself as a third or fourth starter. If it doesn't happen, he'll be an effective setup man. The 22-year-old doesn't quite have Cash's defensive skills, but he is very good with the glove and he has far more offensive ability. He could hit .260 with 20 homers per year in the majors.Expect him to spend 2004 in Triple-A and take over as Toronto’s catcher in 2005. He has a mid-90s fastball and a hard slider that make him extremely difficult to hit when he’s on. Command is a major problem, so he probably won’t be much of a factor until 2006. 7. Brandon League - RHP - Age 21 - ETA: 2006 6-6, 3.28 ERA, 134 H, 95/38 K/BB in 137 IP between two Single-A clubs. 2001 second-round pick throws a mid-90s fastball. Secondary pitches need work. 8. David Bush - RHP - Age 24 - ETA: May 2005 14-6, 2.79 ERA, 137 H, 148/28 K/BB in 158 IP between Single-A Dunedin and Double-A New Haven. Former college closer has low-90s fastball, quality slider and excellent control. Could be a fourth starter or a closer for Toronto. 9. John-Ford Griffin - OF - Age 24 - May 2005 His .279/.361/.461 during a disappointing season at Double-A New Haven. All of his value is offensive, so he needs a big year in Triple-A in 2004 to have any chance of working his way into Toronto’s plans. 10. Aaron Hill - SS - Age 22 - ETA: 2007 First-round pick in 2003 edges 2002 first-rounder Russ Adams for a spot on the list. .361/.446/.492 in 33 games for Rookie Auburn before struggling in 32 games at Dunedin (.286/.343/.345). Will end up at second or third and should have the bat to handle either.
