Learning about current methods and topics in the field of research (15%; e.g., literature research, courses). 2. Presentation of results (20%; e.g., meetings, conferences, publications) Research topics: We are broadly interested in microbial eukaryotes, tiny organisms with complex cells like those of animals and plants. They are mostly invisible to the naked eye, but account for half of the carbon fixation and many other ecological processes on our planet. Currently our research focuses on the genomics of marine microalgae and giant viruses infecting eukaryotes. Successful candidates will focus on the evolutionary and ecological genomics of coccolithophores, the only group of microalgae that are capable of calcification, converting carbon dioxide and calcium into calcite (chalk) platelets that can be sedimented at the bottom of the ocean. People can also develop other projects related to microbial eukaryote evolution and ecology. Requirements: 1. a degree in informatics, biology, natural sciences, or any related field 2. motivation to work in a research environment 3. ability to work both independently and as part of a team 4. sufficient English skills for reading, writing, and oral communication in science (the working language at the institute is English) 5. skills: 1. R language 2. another programming language (Python, Perl, C++, or others) 3. Linux/Unix environment 4. experience in working on a biological project (e.g., sequencing/genomic/evolutionary analyses) Any of the following would be a plus, but not required: 1. experience in artistic design and common graphics editor programs 2. server/database management 3. high-performance computing 4. geographic information systems 5. bioimage analyses 6. web development 7. other relevant skills (please describe) Salary: 1. Every year there is a bonus comparable to 1.5-month salary, so the annual salary is the monthly times 13.5. 2. Starting salary for a master's graduate: NTD 45,000/month (NTD 607,500 p.a.) 3. Starting salary for a doctoral graduate: NTD 66,000/month (NTD 891,000 p.a.). 4. Adjusted according to the candidate’s experience and qualifications. 5. The contract can be renewed each year with a salary increase of about 3%. Additional raise is possible. 6. Postdoctoral candidates are encouraged and will be assisted by the PI to apply for competitive fellowships. About the lab: This is a newly founded lab. Passionate researchers from around the world are welcome to join us. We encourage science communication and international exchange by providing funding for attending conferences/workshops/courses in Taiwan and abroad. Short-term exchange abroad in collaborating labs is also possible. Lab dinners and an annual lab retreat will be arranged.
