Portland Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard discussed Friday
during an interview how franchise president Larry Miller's past work with the
Nike Jordan Brand helped the team sign forward Juwan Howard; his thoughts as
the Blazers head into training camp; contract negotiations with forward
LaMarcus Aldridge; and baking a cake. ...

On how the team pursues free agents and on the acquisition of forward Juwan
Howard:
球队究竟如何将朱王买到手:
It's different processes for different players. For specifically Juwan,
(franchise president) Larry Miller had dinner with us, with (Blazers coach)
Nate (McMillan) and Juwan, because he already had an existing relationship.
So, we do try to leverage that. (Miller) has got a lot of relationships —
Juwan was part of the (Nike) Jordan Brand, so we definitely brought (Miller)
into that — and I mean that in a good way; I'm not trying to say leverage in
a bad way. What I'm saying is ... we at all cost try to — how do I say this?
— take the business side out as much as we can. And sometimes you can't;
it's just impossible. But build a program, not a franchise, a program,
because there's two different things. A franchise, you know, they're just
cookie cutters. Programs are unique; they have their own sets of value
systems; they have their own processes. And hopefully we've brought some good
processes to this organization. And we all feel very strongly about how we
want to do it. Sometimes it is — I wouldn't say a challenge, but — we all
express our opinions, but we're also good listeners. And I think that's, in
terms of a leadership group, that's what you want. You want to be able to
hear when Larry feels strongly about something. You want to hear when Nate
feels strongly about something. Or Mr. (team owner Paul) Allen.
每个球员都有不同的买进方式。朱王这次我们依然使出我们最擅长的吃饭策略。
而我们也尽可能的利用现有的关系去牵线。Miller就跟朱王有很深的关系,
因为他们都跟勾勾乔丹牌有关系,所以这次吃饭策略Miller也要出席。
当然我们没有要这麽心机,但又未尝不是个好方法。我们总是尽可能的尝试,就
在商言商的立场也是。建立一个方案,而不是使用特权,这是不同的东西。
特权就很俗套,而方案就很特别。但他们各有各的价值;他们也各有不同的进行方式。
而但愿我们已经为这组织带来良好的计画方案了。我们对我们走的每一步棋都相当
有信心。我们总是表达我们的意见,但我们亦是好得听众。我认为这是领导很重要
的条件。你会想要知道Miller、Nate的感受,还有Allen也是。
On his thoughts as the team heads into training camp:
在训练营中身为球队头如何处之:
Each team has its own identity, right? And we stay true to our core values.
But what I always look forward to is how everything plays out. What I do
believe in is this: Is that we've got a great group of young men who are
committed to playing the best basketball that they possibly can play. And
where that takes us, I don't know. I can't speculate on that. What I do know
is, ('The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' author) Stephen Covey has
that saying, 'Start with end in mind,' right? We know what we want to be,
right? We want to make this community proud of us, and there's a lot of ways
that we can do that. But, if at the end of the year, the community is proud
of us, we know we have done our job. I think we've done it pretty good the
last couple of years. And that's what we strive for every single day.
每个球队都会有他自己的特性。我们忠於我们的核心价值观,但我总是期待他能够
发挥出来。而我相信:我们拥有良好的青春肉体团队,他们可以彼此竞争成长,
打出最好的篮球。但这会带来什麽?我也说不准,我无法揣测。而我知道Stephen Covey
(七个高效率人士作者)曾说过:开始的时候在心中看到结果。对不?我们知道我们
想要什麽,我们要让这个社区以我们为傲,而我们也知道要达成这麽目的有很多方法。
如果这球季结束之後,这社区以我们为傲,我们就知道我们成功了。我认为过去几年
我们做的非常好。这也是我们每天都想要抓住的。
On using training camp as way to watch roster and depth-chart issues sort
themselves out:
这麽深的阵容的排序问题:
We talked about it as, we had to get the ingredients to bake a cake. And
then, ultimately, you have to put the cake in the oven. I think we're in the
oven stage. Now, you've got to put it in the oven, let it cook for a while,
and then bring it out and see what you got. And we're in that phase.
我们之前就谈过这问题了,我们已经有做一个蛋糕的成份了。然後你最终要把蛋糕放进
烤箱烤。我认为我们还在烤的阶段。你现在要做的就是,把蛋糕放进去烤一段时间,

On the status of contract negotiations with Aldridge:
跟LMA的磋商呢:
(No change) since we talked last. I mean, we're talking every day. So, we're
going to keep working on it.
还没有任何的改变,我的意思是我们每天都很努力谈论到这麽问题,而我们每天
都努力要完成这项工作。
