Jerryd Bayless plans to bring what he learns in Vegas ba
时间Mon Jul 13 17:32:13 2009
The last time Jerryd Bayless played in Las Vegas, he remembers having quite
the strut, and an attitude to go along with his swagger.
As a rookie for the Trail Blazers, he had just torched the NBA Summer League
with a 29.8-point average in four games, set a scoring record and garnered
the league's Most Valuable Player award.
He remembers feeling on top of the world, as good as Olympians Chris Paul and
Deron Williams, and ready to make an immediate impact in the NBA.
"I thought, 'Pfft. What can you tell me? I scored 30 a game,'" Bayless said.
"I wasn't quite that cocky but ... at the same time, (I was feeling) there's
not really too much you can say to me right now. Who else has done that
coming into the league? Chris, D.Will ... none of them came in and scored 30
a game. But it was the worst possible thing. At the time I thought it was the
best possible thing, but for me and this team, it was the worst possible
thing."
As many players before him have discovered (Qyntel Woods once left Vegas as
the leading scorer), success in summer league doesn't necessarily translate
into success in the NBA. In what he considers a frustrating learning
experience, Bayless in his rookie season mostly sat on the bench, averaging
12.4 minutes in 53 games.
"The NBA can humble you pretty quick," said Bayless, who averaged 4.3 points
and 1.5 assists. "And it definitely did that to me last year."
"NBA能够很快的让一个球员谦逊(渺小)起来"
There was a 10-game stretch in January and February when Bayless flourished.
While starter Steve Blake was injured, Bayless became the backup to Sergio
Rodriguez and averaged 11.0 points and 2.8 assists, including key
performances in road wins at New Jersey (23 points) and New Orleans (19
points, six assists).
Ready to show point guard skills
But for the most part, Bayless was predictable, never able to shed the
attacking, Tasmanian devil-style play that was fed and created in summer
league. In part, the Blazers had only themselves to blame for his lack of
development in running an offense. They played Bayless at shooting guard last
summer while former first-round pick Petteri Koponen played point guard.
Still, Bayless refuses to accept that as an excuse.
"It's my fault," he said. "Scoring 30 and all that stuff -- it's great and
obviously looks good and what not -- but for this team and what this team
needs, I need to be more of a distributor and hit the shot when it's there
for me. I went the wrong direction, I guess. I just didn't do the right
thing."
Today, when Bayless leads the Blazers into their summer league opener against
Toronto, he will once again be the focal point of the team's coaching staff
and upper management. But this time, Bayless says he will be intent on
showing the Blazers his point guard skills, rather than posting gaudy
statistics.
"Being the point guard of (the Blazers) is what I want to do," Bayless said.
"And I know I'm going to be prepared this year, because I had a lot of time
to sit and watch last year. I think I figured out a lot of things."
Bayless said he plans to apply his studies of two NBA point guards in
particular -- Blake and Denver's Chauncey Billups.
From Blake, he said he's learned about pace -- knowing when to push, when to
set up the offense. He studied how Blake played off Brandon Roy, drifting
into the corner for three-pointers, and the types of passes Blake made to Roy
off the Blazers' "power" series -- which are down screens designed to get the
ball to Roy.
"I told Steve after the playoffs that I don't think he gets enough credit for
how good he is," Bayless said. "People don't realize that Steve is really
good, I mean, he did some great things for us."
During the season, he watched Billups, a bulky guard like himself, who came
into the league as a scorer. He studied how Billups blended "the best of both
worlds" -- scoring and assisting.
"And truthfully, it took (Billups) a long time to figure out what it took,"
Bayless said. "(Knowing that) it took him that long, I've been on the watch,
and I've dissected what he has done and added that to my game. When I have (a
scoring opportunity), I'm going to take it. But other than that, I'm going to
run the team."
The Blazers aren't totally convinced Bayless is a true point guard. Coach
Nate McMillan admits that he sees Bayless much like he did Jarrett Jack -- a
player who thinks he is a point guard but is probably better suited to be a
combo guard, or a point/shooting guard.
"What some people get caught up in is making this guy or that guy into
something," McMillan said. "But I say let's take advantage of what the guy
does. So I want to see him play point guard in Vegas, but not necessarily
become one. Just play it. If you score, that's fine, but show me you can
create things."
McMillan said he envisions pairing Bayless and Rudy Fernandez together this
season, which will include stretches of Fernandez playing point guard. In
fact, a preseason priority for McMillan is to play Fernandez at point guard,
which he feels will allow Bayless to use his strength as a scorer.
Bayless insists he is a pure point guard, and emphatically shoots down
notions that he is a combo guard. He is intent on showing it this week during
the Blazers' five summer league games.
Nobody knows specifically what Bayless has to do to prove he can play point
guard. General manager Kevin Pritchard, McMillan and Bayless all say it's an
intangible skill set, but one that is discernable when right.
"It's not necessarily going out and passing the ball, or not scoring, its
being aggressive and being able to run the team," Bayless said. "It's taking
what the defense is giving you, getting people into their spots. It's not
just one particular thing."
Playing some important pickup
The one particular thing it is: an opportunity. If he shows he can play the
position it bodes well for his future on a team that is carrying only two
"point guards." If there are questions after summer league, it could lead to
even more rumors that the Blazers are looking to acquire an upgrade at point
guard this summer.
"It is an opportunity for me, whether I can take advantage or not is up to me
now," Bayless said. "Hopefully I can do some things that coach likes and
figure this thing out. I just want to be part of this team, help this team
and play. Whether that's scoring, assisting, whatever -- being the point
guard of this team is what I want to do."
"我想成为这支球队的一部份,帮助这支球队运作,不管是得分,助攻或是其他有的没的
--身为这支球队的控卫就是我想做的"
He says he has been playing pickup games in his hometown of Phoenix against
NBA players Mike Bibby, Amare Stoudemire and former University of Oregon
player Alex Scales. In those pickup games he rediscovered his jump shot and
his confidence.
Last season, Bayless made 36.5 percent of his shots, including 7 of 27 from
three-point range (25.9 percent). And it wasn't that he missed, he missed
badly.
"I've never shot that bad in my life," Bayless said. "My whole life I have
been a shooter. I just didn't have the confidence last year. It won't be like
that this year, I will tell you that much."
