Timeout? For Blake, it's time to shoot

TORONTO - The shot that won the game Sunday for the Trail Blazers -- a
straight-on three-pointer by Steve Blake with 8.4 seconds left -- almost
never happened.
On the other end of the court, behind Blake, Blazers coach Nate McMillan was
yelling for a timeout.
"I heard something," Blake said, starting a giggle that turned into full
laughter. "And I knew in my head it was, 'Timeout!'"
It was a chaotic moment in the game. The Blazers trailed Toronto 97-95 and
had just missed three close-range shots. In the fight for the rebound, the
ball caromed out to the perimeter, where Rudy Fernandez chased it down and
quickly passed to Blake with about 13 seconds left.
But as his conscience heard McMillan's call for a timeout, Blake listened to
his own inner coach and essentially vetoed McMillan.
McMillan。
With most NBA players, ignoring a coach's call for a timeout in order to take
the winning shot could be a case of selfishness. Or stubbornness.
But with Blake it was the perfect example of how he is the team's second head
coach.
See, all game McMillan was either barking at the Blazers from the sideline,
or screaming at them in huddles to move the ball.
。
"Either we shoot, attack or pass!" McMillan implored during a second-half
timeout. "But don't hold the ball."
What McMillan had identified was that the Raptors' defense was more effective
when it had time to recover or adjust from screens or passes. So even when
Brandon Roy, the master of pacing, would hold the ball and survey the
defense, McMillan would shriek for him to move the ball. When the Blazers did
so, the Raptors were often scrambling, making them more susceptible.
Blake processed all of that in the course of about a second and a half, and
with 17,671 in the Air Canada Centre screaming. Yeah, he heard McMillan with
his ears, but he also heard him in his mind, from earlier timeouts and
sideline shouts.
"I felt good with the ball, and I felt confident," Blake said of his split
decision to go for the shot. "But at the same time, I thought of how when we
allowed them to set up their defense, we weren't getting good looks."
A timeout, of course, would allow Toronto to set up its defense.
So Blake pressed on.
"When everybody is scrambling around you, you can get good shots," Blake
said. "I attacked and got (Jose Calderon) on his heels."
Blake
说。
Afterward, McMillan humorously recounted his sideline antics as Blake rose up
for the shot.
"It was me (yelling), 'Tiiiiiime ... out! ... Good shot, Blake!" McMillan
laughed at himself.
It was Blake's fifth three-pointer of the game and the 242nd of his Blazers
career, moving him into a tie with Scottie Pippen for ninth-most in franchise
history. It put the finishing touches on a 19-point, seven-rebound,
four-assist performance that included just one turnover in 33 minutes.
。
Some might find it surprising to see Blake mentioned in the same sentence as
Pippen, or to think of him essentially over-ruling his coach. But Blake has
quietly become one of the major forces on this young Blazers team.
Blake
Behind the scenes, Blake is a fiery competitor who can instantly set a tone
in Blazers practices. He is the player most likely to kick over a bench in
practice or punt a ball into the rafters, and he is the only Blazer who spent
part of his summer wrestling and working out with a professional Ultimate
Fighter (Nate Quarry).
His teammates also call him one of the smartest on the team, knowing just the
right time to call plays for certain players. But above all, he is perhaps
the most selfless guy on the team -- not caring about his points, or
statistics for that matter -- which is such an important trait for a point
guard.
"He's just leading this team," McMillan said. "He's got a feel for them. He
feels comfortable talking to them and leading them, and I can tell they
respect his game and what he brings to the floor. Plus, he has been knocking
down big shots. He is doing a great job."
Before the Toronto game, I was talking with Blazers assistant general manager
Tom Penn. We were discussing the Blazers' depth and how they might be among
the deepest teams in the NBA. But eventually, Penn said, games are won by the
top three players.
That got me to thinking: Who are the Blazers top three? Obviously, Brandon
Roy is No.1. And LaMarcus Aldridge is No.2. Who, I asked Penn, does he think
is No.3? We agreed it has often rotated among different players, but Penn
first said that for many games this season, the No.3 player has been Blake.
I'm not sure many would have guessed that designation at the beginning of
this season. In fact, I think among outsiders or casual fans, Blake is
probably the least valued, and most overlooked, starter on the Blazers.
I know as a reporter, I often unconsciously overlook Blake in stories because
he is ... well, boring. I find myself usually writing about a lob pass from
Sergio Rodriguez to Rudy Fernandez, or a big block from Joel Przybilla, or of
course, the late-game heroics of Roy. But there Blake is every night, putting
up his solid numbers while never doing anything crazy or out of character --
just doing his job like a professional. This season, he is averaging a
career-high 11.4 points while also adding 4.2 assists. He is shooting a
career-best 43.3 percent on three-pointers.
I also find myself passing Blake up in the locker room. Even though he is one
of the most friendly and enjoyable guys to shoot the breeze with, when the
notepad and tape recorder come out, Blake becomes the master of the cliche.
"I'm not cocky," Blake says when I ride him about his politically correct
quotes. "I'm about the team. That's the only way I know how to talk."
So, when it comes time for headlines or attention, Blake is often found right
where he wants to be -- in the background.
"I kind of like it that way," Blake said. "If I had a lot of people talking
about me, teams might focus on me. I don't need all that stuff. Some guys
want it and need it, so let them have it. I'm cool. I've been in the league
six years now. I don't all of the sudden need fame and fortune. I'd just as
soon keep doing what I'm doing and play another six years. I'd be fine with
that."
