As we head into the fourth game of this five-game road trip, things clearly
feel different now. On this long trip, some questions have been answered, but
others remain. Even though the Trail Blazers went 3 and 2 on their first
five-game trip, this one has been more impressive, of course, being they've
won the first three games.
The Trail Blazers are riding a 6-game winning streak, and have a one-game
lead over the Denver Nuggets in the Northwest Division. As we've said so many
times, not many people expected the Blazers to be in this position when the
schedule came out. It was too tough, too many good opponents early, too many
road games (16 of the first 24), blah, blah, blah. I've talked it to death,
as you know.
It's not like we were all making those "just-in-case" excuses, but, we
were just looking at things with perspective. The difficulty of the schedule
was probably too much for a team this young. Obviously, following the last
month, we've had to adjust our expectations. I thought some fans'
expectations were unrealistic, and I certainly discussed that with you. Now,
however, I'm on board, for the most part. I'm letting myself think bigger.
Are you feeling that? A little scary, isn't it?
To accept that this team truly is as good as its record, and there's
every reason to feel that way, it automatically changes the expectations.
This team is on pace to win 57 games right now. And, they've jumped on this
track while playing the toughest portion of the schedule. Martell Webster,
the team's starting small forward in training camp, hasn't played yet. Greg
Oden has played in only 13 NBA games, is only beginning to become comfortable
with this NBA game, and his teammates are still adjusting to playing with him.
In other words, all the pad that we built into this situation before the
season, hasn't been necessary. Do we now strip away all our fears, accept
that this is a team that will be challenging for home-court advantage in the
Western Conference, and set ourselves up for a reality that may or may not
hit us in the face later?
This is not meaning to sound pessimistic. I'm just being honest. Perhaps
it sounds like I'm not willing yet to let myself dream big. There's probably
something to that. I know it's a long season, and there will be lows to go
along with these highs. I guess as long as you realize that going in, and you
keep your eyes wide open, what's to fear? Preparing for the worst, and being
pleasantly surprised at the best, is probably not a healthy way to live
anyway. I do it, but that doesn't mean it makes sense.
(Sorry,
What gives me confidence is the knowledge that this team hasn't even
approached its potential yet. They played very well on the last homestand,
and played a very solid game in Detroit. But, against the Knicks and Wizards
they weren't at their best, and looked like a young team. Yet, they won those
games. I'm comforted by that. I would imagine you are as well.
It seems like we are so early into this NBA season, but the truth is,
we're almost one-quarter of the way through already. What's more, by this
time next week, the Blazers will have played almost 40 percent of their road
games. And, this stretch of playing a game every 1.8 days, will be over.
There are still very hectic times left on the schedule, but the perfect storm
is coming to an end, and not only are we still afloat, we're cruising. As
excited as I was heading in, I'm not sure I expected that.
I've told this story before, but I still vividly remember sitting in
Kevin Pritchard's office back in August, when the NBA schedule was released.
We were walking through the first 24 games, 16 of which were on the road. We
starting picking off realistic wins and losses. When we got to the end of the
24 games, we were both at about 7 or 8 wins. We're at 14 now, and this
stretch isn't even over. We weren't being negative, or complaining (okay, we
were complaining), but that's just the way things looked.
Now, to the business at hand (I intended to write this post about the
game against Boston, but got carried away- that's what happens when you're
trying to stay on Pacific Time and it gets to be 2am back here), the game
against the Celtics.
What are you realistically expecting against Boston? What will make you
happy? Are you content with another 3-2 record on a five-game road trip, and
are thinking that anything else you get is gravy? Is this team ready to be
measured, once again, on a national stage? The first time (opening night)
didn't go so well.
The players have certainly said the right things. They feel ready, and go
into this game with a chip on their shoulders. They were pushed around,
bullied, and ended up deaf in one year from Kevin Garnett's non-stop chatter
in the two games last season. And, don't think Boston isn't going to be up
for this one. They're tired of hearing how Portland is the darling of the
NBA, a future championship team, full of rising stars, and great young men.
All of our focus right now is on this game. We're even staying in Boston
following the game, and not flying to Toronto until Saturday afternoon. We
almost never do that. It really has nothing to do with anything other than
not wanting to go through customs in Canada and getting into the hotel at
4am. But, it'll help not having to pack and rush to get to the bus that will
take us to the game.
It feels different, and that helps. Everything feels different now.
