Sports, which says the Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies have discussed a swap primarily involving Travis Outlaw and Mike Conley, I have a message for you: If the rumors you read don't involve Raef LaFrentz's contract, I wouldn't put much stock into them. LaFrentz, as pretty much everybody knows, is out for most of the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, and is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $12.7 million. But if he misses the first 41 games of the season, each successive game missed will bring an 80 percent return of its pro-rated salary in insurance to the team that holds his contract. The combination of the expiring contract and insurance is expected to draw significant trade interest. There's two reasons the Blazers will look to play this card over others like the one reported on Yahoo! -- which I was firmly told before Friday's game will not happen. One, the Blazers seem to be quite happy with their point guard play as Steve Blake, Sergio Rodriguez and Brandon Roy have performed very solidly. They don't seem to feel that they need an elite-level point guard to turn the corner, and they certainly don't seem to be in the mode of wanting to address the position by developing another young point guard. If they were, wouldn't Jerryd Bayless be getting more minutes? The second point is a question you need to ask yourself when reading these rumors: Why would the Blazers look to do a deal involving a player, when they stand to lose so much more doing that than if they were to trade LaFrentz's contract, which is going to expire at the end of the season anyway? And that's not just my line of thinking. When I asked Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard about the Yahoo! rumor on Thursday, he declined to discuss it -- as is his standard policy -- but instead started a discussion about LaFrentz's contract. "That's the card I want to play," he said. So keep that in mind as the rumors start to heat up over the next couple months. I'm not saying the Blazers won't work a deal that doesn't involve LaFrentz's contract. But from what I'm hearing, the possibility of that happening before next summer sounds very slim. --
