Part II - Blake's alter ego: Lieutenant Dan

Trail Blazers point guard Steve Blake is probably the most approachable
player on the team, and certainly one of the most down-to-earth,
easy-to-talk-to guys on the team.
But without a doubt, Blake also has the biggest temper on the team (Joel
Przybilla is a close second).
"I've been known to flare up every now and again,'' Blake says almost
sheepishly. "Most of my teammates, or people who are around me, known I'm a
nice guy. But I can snap in a heartbeat.''
Blake's most well-known outburst as a Blazer came during last season's
pivotal December practice in San Antonio, when the team was 5-11 and
scuffling. Coach Nate McMillan designed that practice to be physical, halfway
hoping his team would get in a fight.
Well into the practice - which included a confrontation between Martell
Webster and Joel Przybilla - Blake took the tension to a different level when
he kicked a fold-up chair. McMillan was none too pleased, and reminded Blake
that the team was a guest in a community center. He ordered Blake to pick up
the chair.
Blake
Blake did ... only to hurl it even further from the practice court.
"I've been worse,'' Blake said when the San Antonio story was brought up. "I
got in a fight with Nene (during Blake's tenure in Denver). He gave me a
couple elbows in the side, then I gave him a couple of elbows. He got in my
face, I shoved him real hard, and he came up and grabbed my neck. And I threw
a punch right back.
"And that was it. We were best friends after that,'' Blake said. "It's just
the way it is. It's the competitiveness of it.''
It has reached the point where most on the team can see Blake's rampages
coming. It's why assistant Monty Williams has nicknamed Blake "Lieutenant
Dan" - a play off the ranting-and-raving character in the movie "Forrest
Gump".
Monty
"Ball racks beware when he is in the shooting drill and he misses a few
shots,'' Williams said. "So I call him 'Lieutenant Dan'. It's like our little
joke. The first year he was here, I called him that and he would look at me.
Now it's funny, because he knows it's the truth. But I don't mind that
(fire). If a guy is making mistakes and he is blase about it, then I'm
worried about it.''
Most say they can see a Blake outburst coming by his eyes.
"His eyes go crazy,'' his wife, Kristin, said. "It scares me a bit.'
Kristin
Added general manager Kevin Pritchard: "I've seen him get so mad ... and you
see it with his eyes ... and the next thing you know, he's throwing that
ball.''
Pritchard said he would like to see Blake channel some of his anger. He
thinks Blake can become a leader in the locker room if he would be as hard on
his teammates and he is on himself.
"I don't think he realizes that he has credibility on this team to get on
other guys,'' Pritchard said. "He can be as tough on himself as anyone, but
the one thing I want him to do is realize he can have an effect on everyone.
He has a right to get on a Brandon Roy, and a LaMarcus Aldridge. And for him
to take the next step as a point guard, he has to realize he can get on
LaMarcus if LaMarcus isn't doing what he is supposed to. That's the next step
in his growth.''
Blake said the root of his anger is simple.
"I just don't like people to get the best of me. Ever,'' Blake said. "That's
why I have to stay on top of my game.''
