Portland's Fernandez signs new deal in Spain July 13, 2007 By Cindy Garcia-Bennett Special to PA SportsTicker BADALONA, Spain (Ticker) -- Spain international guard Rudy Fernandez has extended his contract with DKV Joventut for three seasons, tying him to the club through the 2010-11 campaign. Fernandez, who was selected in the first round of the NBA draft on June 28 by Phoenix and then traded to Portland, had been weighing his options with Barcelona also interested in signing him. In announcing the new deal, DKV indicated on its web site it would not hinder the player's move to the NBA. "The club, in exchange (for signing the deal), will ease his way to the NBA in any of the seasons," the club said. DKV did not indicate if a buyout clause had been inserted into his new deal, however. "I value this agreement greatly," Fernandez said. "I think Joventut have shown that they value me and trust me. They have improved my contract, that was something on our minds and more so, have given me the possibility of going to the NBA, which is my aim. "For that reason, I have turned down many offers from other teams because I preferred to remain at DKV Joventut for one more year and to be with my all-time club.
