Oden vs. Durant: It's back on Posted by Jason Quick July 05, 2007 21:58PM Categories: Summer League Some big news to kick off the Las Vegas Summer League: No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden will indeed play in the Trail Blazers' July 15 game against No. 2 pick Kevin Durant and Seattle. Originally, the Blazers thought Oden would miss the game in order to attend the ESPY's - an ESPN awards show. But after some fact-checking, the Blazers learned that the show airs on the 15th, but will be taped on July 12. Therefore, Oden will miss the July 11 game against the Los Angeles Lakers, but will play in the Blazers other four games. Oden will be presenting an award at the show, and is also up for an award. He will leave the Blazers' Summer League team on July 11 and be back in time for the July 14 game against Phoenix. "It's a once in a lifetime thing,'' general manager Kevin Pritchard said. "We would let any of our guys attend something like that.'' In the meantime, the Blazers are still concerned about Oden's health. He is still nursing a sinus infection/cold, and they have discovered that Oden will also need to have his tonsils removed. Pritchard said the team will closely monitor Oden's health during the nearly two-week Summer League camp, especially knowing that Oden is set to participate in the US National team mini-camp shortly after the Summer League is over. They don't want to burn the kid out before the season has even started. It's likely that Oden will have his tonsils removed after the US National team mini-camp, but the Blazers have no control over the matter because they won't have official ownership of Oden until training camp begins the first week of October. At any rate, for now, it appears the marquee matchup between Oden and Durant will go down on the 15th, which should make for some good theater.
