Rookie Rankings - Summer League '06 Edition
By Brad Friedman
And so begins a new season of Rookie Rankings. A new class of young men will be
judged for the better part of the next year, all the way up to the Rookie of
the Year annoucement. So who has the inside track on the award? NBA.com sifted
through all the statistics of the four NBA summer leagues and ranked the
rookies based on their July play.
Summer League Rookie Rankings
1. RANDY FOYE, G, MINNESOTA
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
32.8 24.8 4.2 2.2 2.2 0.4 .530 .375 .868
Foye took league MVP honors at the Vegas Summer League, averaging 24.8 points
on .530 shooting in five games, while bringing tears to the eyes of Minnesota
homer and NBA TV's Rick Kamla. Foye was virtually unstoppable, showing
"star-like quality" according to ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst and getting to the
hole whenever he wanted.
2. BRANDON ROY, G, PORTLAND
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
26.4 19.0 3.4 3.6 0.6 0.4 .647 .667 .694
In Vegas, Roy averaged 19.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while
shootin incredible .647 from the field in five games. According to Kamla,
Roy "has a vibe, a poise, and an aura that screams star."
3. ADAM MORRISON, F, CHARLOTTE
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
29.2 24.6 2.6 2.0 0.2 0.4 .398 .286 .925
Morrison lit up the Pepsi Pro Summer League to the tune of 24.6 points per
game, getting to the line over 10 times per contest. However, he collected just
13 rebounds and one steal in nearly 146 minutes, giving Roy the edge at No. 2.
4. MARCUS WILLIAMS, G, NEW JERSEY
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
32.4 16.6 3.4 9.3 1.0 0.2 .456 .556 .840
Williams may indeed be worthy of the label of Jason Kidd's future successor at
point guard. Averaging 16.6 points and 9.3 assists, and knocking down 10-of-18
three-pointers in Orlando, NBA brass walked away quite impressed.
5. TYRUS THOMAS, F, CHICAGO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.0 16.2 7.0 2.1 1.0 1.4 .444 .167 .632
Thomas was among the top players in Orlando's Pepsi Pro Summer League,
averaging 16.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 blocks. He saw action
at small forward as well as the four spot, drew fouls, crashed the offensive
glass, and made his presence felt with his outstanding athleticism and energy.
6. RONNIE BREWER, G, UTAH
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
25.5 16.0 2.7 1.8 1.6 0.5 .563 .667 .710
It didnt matter he came off the bench four of six games. Brewer finished third
in the Rocky Mountain Revue in scoring (16.0 ppg) and field goal percentage
(.563), and fourth in steals (1.7). He was named to the All-Revue team.
7. ANDREA BARGNANI, F, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
26.2 13.2 3.8 0.6 0.4 1.0 .467 .353 .857
Bargnani wasn't "the man" in Italy, nor did he try to be that guy in Vegas.
Nevertheless, Bargnani put up respectable numbers, including a pair of 20-plus
point performances. If it wasn't for an eight-minute game in his final
performance, his averages would be higher.
8. MAURICE AGER, G, DALLAS
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
31.0 20.0 0.7 1.0 0.0 0.0 .444 .471 .800
Ager played three games in Vegas and finished fifth in the league in scoring
(20.0 ppg). Unfortunately, that's all he really did on the stat sheet, and for
that reason, you don't see his name higher on this list.
9. JORDAN FARMAR, G, LOS ANGELES LAKERS
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
31.3 16.1 3.0 4.4 1.7 0.3 .520 .261 .725
Farmar was the Lakers' go-to guy at the Southern California Summer Pro League,
and he responded with a 16.1 points per game scoring average on .520 field goal
percentage. Throw in 4.4 assists per game for good measure and you have a point
guard who could compete for playing time on the Lakers next season.
10. LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE, F, PORTLAND
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
33.0 11.6 6.6 2.2 1.0 1.8 .479 .000 .867
Aldridge's stat line in Vegas won't blow you away, but his overall performance
there was solid nonetheless. His best game was his last: 19 points, nine
rebounds and four blocks vs. the Suns. He tied for second in the league in
blocks (1.8 bpg).
