The Oakland Athletics continued their impressive offseason run on Wednesday,
signing free-agent left-handed reliever Eric O’Flaherty to a two-year, $7
million contract, according to major league sources.
O’Flaherty, who turns 29 on Feb. 5, underwent Tommy John surgery and is not
expected to be available until July. But he could be a candidate to be the
Athletics’ closer in 2015 if the team does not re-sign righty Jim Johnson,
and his deal includes performance bonuses that could push the total value to
approximately $10 million, sources said.
The two-time defending American League West champion Athletics have been one
of the most active teams in the sport this offseason, trading for Johnson,
right-handed setup man Luke Gregerson and outfielder Craig Gentry, and
signing free-agent left-hander Scott Kazmir and infielder Nick Punto.
O’Flaherty was one of the top left-handed relievers in the majors from
2009-12 with the Atlanta Braves, producing a 1.95 ERA and holding opponents
to a .605 OPS in 231-1/3 innings. Left-handed hitters managed only a .503 OPS
against him during that span.
