标题：Jay Marshall is back; Ellis sits but Suzuki doesn't From Chronicle Staff Writer Susan Slusser at Kansas City As expected, spot starter Clayton Mortensen was sent out (though he hadn't been told it was just a one-start callup, he assumed as much - he didn't check out of his Sacramento hotel) and left-handed reliever Jay Marshall makes his first return to the club since 2007. Mark Ellis is getting the day off; manager Bob Geren said that Ellis "is a little tired," and Ellis was getting hammered (jokingly) by teammates all morning for being a slacker, especially since catcher Kurt Suzuki is in the lineup in a day after a night game. It could be as hot as 107 degrees today with the heat index, so that's rough duty for a catcher. I asked about Geren's decision to start Suzuki rather than backup Landon Powell and he noted that Suzuki had been off Thursday and he got one inning off Saturday night. He said Suzuki probably won't play Wednesday in Baltimore, either, giving him back-to-back days off with Thursday's offday. Considering the way the season is going, I'm not sure that it's necessary to play Suzuki quite this much, especially with the heat and humidity the team is facing on this road trip - it is supposed to be even hotter and more humid in Baltimore. But Suzuki is fine with it. He said, "I want to play every day. Anyone who doesn't want to play every day probably shouldn't be here." I respect the sentiment, but just because Suzuki wants to play every day doesn't mean he should, especially in this kind of weather. He leads AL catchers with 92 games started, the team is in last place, and he's the team's most valuable everyday player, so it might be nice to get him some more rest.
