HOUSTON (TICKER) —Pitcher Russ Ortiz, who missed all of last season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm, on Tuesday agreed to a minor league contract with the Houston Astros. Houston general manager Ed Wade said the Astros were willing to take a chance on the 34-year-old Ortiz because they believe he is healthy again. “Jack Lind, one of our pro scouts, saw Russ work out in September and was pleased with what he saw,”Wade said.“By all accounts, Russ has rebounded well from Tommy John surgery, and we have no doubt that a healthy Russ Ortiz should be able to come to camp and be a serious contender for a spot in the big league rotation.” After starting two games for the San Francisco Giants in the 2002 World Series, Ortiz moved on the Atlanta Braves in 2003, when he played in the All-Star Game and led the National League in wins with 21. He has a career record of 110-82 with a 4.42 ERA and 1,121 strikeouts in 282 career games, including 253 starts, with San Francisco, Atlanta, Arizona and Baltimore. However, Ortiz's career has been in steady decline since going 15-9 for the Braves in 2004 as he combined to win just seven games from 2005-2007. --
