Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman are just that. So my question is, why would the Astros even toy with the idea of trading Roy? As soon as his name came up, you end those talks, even for Miguel Tejada. Also, why haven't the Astros signed him to a long-term contract? Don't even risk the possiblity of losing him. First of all, I feel that the Astros would have way, way overpaid had they traded Oswalt, Adam Everett and Morgan Ensberg for Miguel Tejada. Heck, I think that an Oswalt for Tejada deal straight-up would have been lopsided, in the Orioles' favor. I just don't think you can replace your ace, especially when he's one of the top five pitchers in the game. No disrespect to Roy, but when you have made it clear you're eyeing free agency, then you cannot expect the Astros not to look to protect themselves, too. The Astros are facing losing him after one more season. But Oswalt wants a five-year deal, which is two years longer than any contract they've given a pitcher since the early 1990s. And of the three-year deals they have handed out, very few were fulfilled without the player missing significant time with an injury. Billy Wagner, Shane Reynolds and Andy Pettitte come to mind. Jose Lima didn't get hurt during his three-year contract, but he was terrible in 2000 and was shipped off to Detroit the next year. He's turning only 29 later this month and takes good care of himself. But he hasn't been injury-free, either. If the Astros are up by a bunch, as they were in Oswalt's last start, there's no reason to keep him out there beyond 100 or so pitches. This team has a shot to make the postseason, which means up to one extra month of work. That means Biggio will sign one more one-year contract, and I believe Tim Purpura and Barry Axelrod, Craig's agent, have had very preliminary conversations in that regard. Also, keep in mind that most coaches throw a round of batting practice. Jeff would not be able to do that, which means the other coaches would have to pick up extra rounds.
