Taveras, who is by all accounts healthy, has underperformed for much of the season, and considering how the offense has struggled lately, Phil Garner had to find ways to inject some life into the lineup. Taveras never hit below .280 last year, but when his average was heading toward the .250 mark by the end of May, it was time to shuffle things a bit. Plus, Willy was having a few defensive issues. When Clemens returns June 22, someone is going to get bumped, and it's going to come down to Nieve or Buchholz. It should be interesting. With everything the Astros pitching staff has gone through this year -- Clemens not starting the season, Oswalt's back injury, Backe's elbow injury, Pettitte's slow start -- it's amazing that this team could actually field the same starting rotation as it did during the stretch run and through the playoffs last year. Clemens' presence is going to be huge for this club. He'll be a solid No. 3 man and will ultimately make the bullpen better. If the relievers keep up this pace (on May 31, the bullpen was on pace to throw 90 more innings than it did last year -- ouch), they'll have nothing left in September. The starters absolutely have to absorb more innings. Granted, the Astros seem to enjoy making their fans wait until the latter half of the season before they really turn it on, but I can't help but notice some glaring differences between this year's team and last year's team. The main worry I have right now is the bullpen. Last year's 'pen was arguably the best in baseball and it carried us through some dark times. However, this year, the once rock steady anchor of our team has seemingly lost its edge. And I'm not just talking about Brad Lidge and his well-publicized struggles. It seems everyone is getting knocked around. Fans, and in many cases, media, think totally differently from the general manager and manager of a team. We see a week of bad pitching from the bullpen and scream, "Get rid of them." We watch a hitter go into a three-week funk and yell, "Trade him, he stinks." Fortunately, the decision makers have cooler heads. Yes, there are times that the bullpen's going to get hammered, and there are times that a hitter is going to struggle mightily. So we took an unofficial survey of club officials in Garner's office the next morning. We decided Berkman's home to dead center traveled 500 feet, and it may have reached as far as 503 feet.
